My girlfriend found Speed Boat Adventures online while planning a trip to Tampa and thought it sounded cool, and indeed it was awesome! You start out filling out some standard paperwork, then you go over some basic boating information (watching for other boats, safety, wake signs, etc). Then once that's clear you go to the boats (I think they said about 30 horsepower or so and they're pretty low in the water, but still fun and safe). You're given a boating instructor who talks about the operation of the boat, keeping your distance from other boats and that sort of thing. Then he leads you and the others in your group (there were only 2 other groups that went with us, but we did go during the week) out of the docks. We spent at least 1.5 hours on the water going at various speeds ranging from idle speed to the max speed of the boats (I'm guessing around 30-40 MPH) but it was hard to tell. Regardless it felt faster than this compared to a car and was a blast. They also give you a chance about half way through to switch drivers if you go as a couple so each of you can drive. You do get a little wet but not soaked, I mostly just got wet in the face. The parking lot is right by the dock so you can leave your stuff in your car, but cameras are okay as long as they're in some kind of case. All in all this was a great experience as I never operated a motor boat before. I would strongly recommend it for anyone looking for some fun in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. (It was about 20-30 minutes from Tampa I believe).
