My husband and 16 year old daughter did SUP while my 14 year old daughter had a surfing lesson (and I sat on the beach). I'm happy my 16 year old paddle boarded before on lakes as their guide just took off once they got on the ocean. Even on the beach he didn't seem like he wanted to be there. They headed along the shore to Black Rock and then turned around. On the way back they said the guide was way ahead and he never looked back to see where the rest of his group was (he had a young girl riding tandem with him and he seemed annoyed by that). If someone in the group was struggling, he would have never known. My 14 year old surfing didn't have it much better. It was a bit disorganized at the beach and my daughter was put with a larger group as they were waiting for someone to show up. When they got in the water it took forever for a guide to realize my daughter was there to help her catch a wave. Once she connected with a guide it was much better and she did have fun. If she wanted to surf again I would use a different tour.

We were there before 7am for 7:30 lesson but there was no one at the meeting point. There was no sign for the school anywhere around. I called and left a message because only a machine answered. I asked around to find the school. A lady in a booth told me the school was somewhere else down the beach walk. We went there and another booth told me there would be someone soon. Finally I got a call at 7:50 and the instructor arrived one and a half hour late at 9am. He blamed tripadvisor for a miscommunication, saying that tripadvisor system had an issue. Even the lesson was too short and brief to grasp the key concepts. He pushed us into a scary waving sea and my wife gave it up immediately and I too soon. This unpleasant experience ruined our invaluable morning time but also the whole day and beyond.

Hubby and I had a great time. Our instructor was super patient, and kept encouraging us. He was professional and courteous, and flexible when we needed to move to calmer waters.
