My husband and I were in New Orleans for three days. A couple weeks before our trip I bought a Groupon for the Strange True Tours City of the Dead Cemetery Tour. The Groupon made the tour 1/2 price, so we paid $20 total for both of us. We met for the tour at 11:15am. Our tour guide Jeffrey checked us in and gave us each an umbrella (for shade from the sun... not for rain!). The walk to St. Louis Cemetery #1 took about 10 minutes. Twice along the way Jeffrey stopped in a shady spot and told us some history. Upon entering the cemetery, the stories just got better and better (probably because Jeffrey distinguished fact from fiction). Jeffrey debunked many myths and had so much knowledge about the history of New Orleans. Jeffrey concluded the tour inside the air conditioned New Orleans Visitors Center. It gets VERY hot in the cemetery (and in New Orleans in general), so it was nice to cool off and absorb some more history at the same time. I highly recommend that anyone and everyone take this tour!

I went with my boyfriend on two of the Strange True Tours on my first visit to New Orleans. We did the "Strange New Orleans" tour in the evening and the "City of the Dead" cemetery tour the next morning. My advice would be to do these tours as soon as you arrive in the city. That way, you know the story behind what you'll be seeing for the rest of the trip. The tour is amazing. If you're a history buff, Jeffrey's well-researched expertise will definitely keep you interested. If you're not a history buff, Jeffrey's anecdotes along the way will keep you entertained. I've been on several walking tours in different cities around the country, and what makes Strange True Tours special is the passion that the guide has for his city. I like to research the cities before I visit, and while I heard many things during the tour that were familiar, I learned some incredible new things that I doubt I would have read about in any tour guide. I laughed a lot and at times felt heavy-hearted (not all aspects of history are happy, but it's still very important to know). After going on both tours, I feel like I made a new friend in New Orleans. I'm definitely going to go on some more tours through Strange True Tours on my next trip to New Orleans, which will hopefully be soon! A few tips: Wear comfortable walking shoes because many of the old French Quarter streets are uneven. Wear a hat for all daytime trips in the summer. Jeffrey brought umbrellas for us to use on the cemetery tour (he is that cool!). Take a bottle of water. Jeffrey covers a lot of information in a small amount of time (about 2 hours), and a lot of it you will want to remember. You might want to bring a pen and paper to jot down book recommendations and other notes.

In town for a music festival, my friend and I booked two tours with Jeffrey and we were both EXTREMELY pleased with our experience. The "Strange True" tour was a perfect way for us to begin our first of five days in the city. The journey begins at a cute coffee shop that is (thankfully) not on Bourbon Street. Jeffrey was warm, pleasant and personable from the start (even when booking the reservation, actually). For 90 minutes, he lead us on a walking tour through a small section of the French Quarter. What a wealth of interesting information!! There were actually 2 native New Orleanians on the tour with us and they appeared to learn quite a bit and had a few myths "busted" during the course of the evening. Anyone concerned about the amount or pace of the walking need not worry. Anyone reading the less than favorable review on this site should take into consideration that the reviewer appears to have been given bad information by a third party. We will return in a few days for the "City of the Dead" cemetary tour and I will amend my review to include highlights and notables for that experience. What I can say right now is that I would have gladly paid two or three times as much for the experience that I had with Jeffrey! I have every confidence that his success will continue, as telling people about his city is surely his life's calling.
