I wasn't quite sure what to expect on this tour. I read reviews , but I was curious to see how they would blend the history of Salem with modern-day witchcraft--especially since those murdered during the witch trials weren't witches!
That said, I went into it with a lot of curiosity and an open mind, and I'm glad I did. Our tour guide (and witch), Tom was awesome. Keep in mind that Tom and the other guides have probably done the tour a million times, but Tom's delivery was fresh, funny, and totally disarmed the group. He put us "under his spell" right from the get go with a very cool ritual, which was not only a unique experience, but it also helped educate the group on the realities of modern-day witchcraft.
From there, he led us through the streets, making us laugh and keeping us engaged with stories about the city's history and insights into witchcraft, myth, and symbolism.
Tom has an almost Pan-like presence--a mixture of humor, mischief and mystery--that had clearly captivated the tour group. In the end, I feel like I learned a lot and was thoroughly entertained.
It's ironic that the original and horrendous actions of the Salem prosecutors in the 1600's had the exact OPPOSITIE effect on their town. Today, Salem is a magnet for witches, the occult, and spooky fun. As a descendent of those prosecutors, I have to say I love what the city has become and I can't wait to return with my wife and kids...
