If you want a flavor of the real, modern Salem - instead of the "Salem for tourists" - this is the tour to take (I'm a local, so I know). I took this tour before the crush of tourist season last night, and found it to be very unique among all of the other witch/history/haunted tours. Yes, there is some history of the witch trials of 1692 woven in, but also a lot of information about the practice of modern witchcraft, as well as its origins (as well as the origin of many of our common holidays) in ancient practices and rituals.
It was a more thoughtful and intelligent tour than you might get elsewhere because our guide Tom, is a practicing witch, and seemed to genuinely want to share his knowledge and experience, not just to recite a script and bring in tourist dollars. And he did this all in a very engaging and entertaining way! I can't say whether the other tour guides for the Witch Walk have as fabulous a sense of humor, but I know they are all witches, so I'm sure the desire to share a better understanding of what is near and dear to their hearts is the same. As other reviewers have mentioned - DO keep an open mind - and enjoy the education!
