Fabulous!! Everything you want to know about turquoise is here and the information is authentic and extensive. This family has a 5 generation history in turquoise and is known the world over. The owner has written an amazing book and a catalog showing the different grades of turquoise from many different mines. They both really should be purchased by anyone serious about turquoise knowledge. This is my 3rd trip to this museum, the first time in it's original location 20 years ago, and it keeps getting more interesting. I never knew so many types of turquoise existed, and neither will you because most people haven't heard of them. I would recommend coming here first before you go out turquoise jewelry shopping. This will give you the foundation you need, and I recommend reading the valuable information. It's fascinating! Between 2 visits, I think it took me approx 6 hours to read and look around, and I didn't finish. Enjoy!

The Turquoise Museum in Albuquerque is a literal treasure trove of all things turquoise. A family business incepted in 1993, I had the pleasure to meet both Dan Joe Lowry and his son Jacob on a quiet day. Their knowledge and particularly the dad’s storytelling were amazing. The combination of tangible passion for turquoise, the in-person education and thought-pieces I received combined with hands-on activities and interactive displays of the museum made this a true and memorable experience. Add to that the house and its antiques itself, it is worth a visit for young and old alike. I was hesitant at first at the ticket price of $20 but I wouldn’t have wanted to miss it. I actually wish I’d had more time and would certainly plan no less than 1.5 hours next time! Thank you to the Lowrys for something special to take away from Albuquerque!

The turquoise exhibits were extensive, and had enough information to interest anyone on your group, whether they are interested in history, geology or how to buy turquoise. It actually has so much information that there is no way to absorb it all. On the other hand, all the staff dodged questions about Gertrude Zachary (who they refer to as Gertrude Schmidt) and the actual history of the castle. One staff member went so far as to say that she really wasn’t part of the family. Ok, she was only married to Richard Zachary for a year. But she built the castle where the museum is now housed, and it would be polite to at least acknowledge that. Families may not always get along, but trying to discount her role as a business woman, or the collector of many of the antiques on display or the very building we were in left a bad taste in my mouth. Go to the museum, enjoy the excellent exhibits and learn how to buy turquoise. But take what you are told about the castle with a grain of salt.
