On this independent bike tour from Old Town Alexandria, enjoy views of the Potomac River as you cycle along the scenic Mount Vernon Trail to historic Mount Vernon Estate, George Washington’s famous 18th-century home. Explore the stately mansion, gorgeous gardens and fascinating educational exhibits at your leisure, and hop back on your bike for your return trip or upgrade to relax on a narrated Potomac River cruise back to Alexandria. (If you choose to return by boat, you must select this option at the time of booking) This is a fun, active and scenic way to experience Mount Vernon.

We recommend guests to come between 8am-9:30am to our store location. The boats leave from Mount Vernon at 1:30PM and returns to Washington DC!

Potomac River

Ride along and enjoy views of the Potomac River. Route is relatively flat with a few rolling hills. Ride is approximately 10 miles to Mount Vernon (about a 1 hour ride). You may go direct or take your time and stop and see various sites, such as Jones Point Light House.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to DC. To begin, the employee who helped us choose our bikes was kind and extremely knowledgeable. I could tell he took a lot of pride in making sure the bikes were in tip-top shape for our excursion. It was about a 10-mile ride from Alexandria to Mount Vernon. The ride is mostly flat and shaded with beautiful views of the Potomac and plenty of lovely spots to stop for photos or rest along the way. We had no trouble using the barcode he sent us to get our tickets at Mount Vernon. The tour of the mansion and the grounds there was both beautiful and fascinating. There was also a great little cafeteria there that had something for everyone in our group. The boat cruise back to Alexandria was not available on the day we were there, so we did the 10-mile trek home. We left the bike shop around 9:30, and we returned around 5:00. We did the trip with 3 kids ages 12 - 17. It was a wonderful experience and a great change of pace from pounding the pavement in the city. Highly recommend!

Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience. We rented 9 bikes for the Mt. Vernon ride + water taxi back. All 9 of the bikes had issues with gears. One bike completely fell apart during the ride. Half of our group had to walk the last 2 miles of the ride. Instead of apologizing and reimbursing us for the faulty bike, we were told that it was a new bike and out of their kindness, they wouldn't charge us to repair it. So they left us stranded with a useless bike. In addition, when we arrived at 9am there was only one person working and several groups ahead of us. We had to wait 30-40 minutes just to get our bikes. The combination of the late start and having to walk over 2 miles, we were late for our Mt. Vernon tour and rushed to get to the water taxi. Not sure what more I could add. It was a horrible experience. Not recommended - unreliable bikes, poor service.

We enjoyed the bike ride - couple of challenging hills but overall a good ride that took less than 1 hour. Once at the estate we checked in for our tickets to mansion. Quite a bit of ground to cover to see all the sites. Highly recommend ferry back to Alexandria or DC. Couldn’t imagine having to ride the bikes back!!!!
