Dana Wharf Whale Watching has a knowledgeable crew who know the ecosystem and are concerned to keep us and the whales and dolphins safe and happy. It's a cute smaller boat so it's agile, but plenty of room to sit and a shaded area from the sun. Best time is Jan-March, and Dana Point Harbor runs its annual Festival of the Whales each March, complete with parade and outside clam chowder competition ($10 for ten tastes, yum). Dana Point Harbor is lovely - lots of good restaurants - and this cruise sails out of it, and then up and down one of the prettiest coasts I know. If there are whales and dolphins out there--which they usually are--this crew will find them. If they don't happen to be out, you still get a terrific little cruise and lots of nice places to eat afterward. Tip: Parking is better on weekdays. Weekends, especially in summer, the Harbor lots do fill up. However, there is a free town shuttle trolley to offsite parking; check the Dana Point Trolley website.
