We had a great experience on the San Juan Safaris sunset whale watching cruise from Friday Harbor on June 20, 2021. We encountered a family of 5 Bigg's Killer Whales right outside the harbor and followed them for almost 2 hours. We enjoyed the trip so much that we booked another on June 24, 2021 at a discounted price for being a repeat customer. This time we traveled farther, but saw several Bigg's Killer Whale groups at various locations. The captain followed at a required distance and alerted other boaters and a ferry of whales in the area--very respectful of protecting the whales. They turned motors off when 2 whales chose to surface and swim very close to our boat. We also saw other marine mammals including harbor seals, porpoise, and bald eagles. The naturalists were great at describing what we were seeing and answering questions. The scenery was also beautiful and the boat was clean and comfortable.

Don’t visit the island without checking this off the list! Olivia, Sarah and Brian made our experience a once-in-a-lifetime one with an outstanding ride and sights you can’t see anywhere else. In a picturesque landscape on a comfortable vessel with outgoing, personable guides, we got lucky and saw three different families of orcas as well as bald eagles, sea lions, and more! Every person we encountered throughout the process was incredibly professional and happy to help with any questions we had. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, fun, genuinely excited about giving us the best possible experience and we learned so much about the environment and the challenges facing it. No two trips are the same and we’ll definitely be heading out with this crew again!

Captain Brian and Max were phenomenal! We saw some awesome whales - more than I had hoped for! They were both so knowledgeable and passionate about the wildlife and did an excellent job tracking the whales, following regulations for the whales' safety, and telling us really interesting information about what we were seeing. I heartily recommend San Juan Safaris - great experience!
