Kaibab National Forest

You will depart Tusayan, Arizona located in the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on the safest and most comfortable-tourism based helicopter in the world. On your 45-minute helicopter flight, enjoy the luxurious comfort and wraparound windows which offer breathtaking views of the Canyon. Enjoy the fantastic views of the Canyon as you fly over the 1.6 million-acre (6,500 km²) Kaibab National Forest, which borders both the north and south rims of the Grand Canyon. The Kaibab National Forest is home to the world’s largest ponderosa pines.

Painted Desert

You will continue your journey as you follow the Colorado River upstream viewing at a distance the 146-square mile Painted Desert and the 70-foot (21-meter) Desert View Watchtower, a National Historic Landmark.

The Desert View Watchtower features an observation deck from which visitors to the national park can view eastern portions of the Grand Canyon.

Marble Canyon

Next, view Marble Canyon, the section of the Colorado River which marks the beginning of the Grand Canyon, and Point Imperial, the highest point on the North Rim at 8,803 feet (2,683 meters). Point Imperial overlooks the Painted Desert and the eastern end of Grand Canyon. You will fly through the Canyon above the North Rim heading south through the Dragon Corridor, the widest and deepest section of the Canyon.

Colorado River

At the end of your helicopter flight, you will cross over the Colorado River and fly over the South Rim and the Kaibab National Forest to land. Please note: Per FAA regulations, all passengers 18 years and older will be required to show photo ID such as a driver's license or passport at the time of check-in.

Great sight seeing experience of the Grand Canyon. The pilot was the best!!! I usually have motion sickness. None.

When arranging our trip to the Grand Canyon we considered the options for add ons. Ultimately the only one we organised in advance was a helicopter flight. We did so because it was our first visit to the Grand Canyon and possibly the only one given all of the other places we have on our list to visit. Having done our research we decided on Maverick Helicopters and chose the Canyon Spirit flight. Although a little more expensive than some flights (there are shorter flights) the time in the air was approximately 45 minutes. It was also ideal as Maverick have a base at Grand Canyon Airport, Hwy 64, Grand Canyon just 5 minutes from where we were staying at the Best Western Grand Canyon enabling us to make best use of every minute of or trip. When first booking we were advised by our travel company that a flight time couldn't be guaranteed. Despite that we expressed a preference for an early flight to hopefully capture the views in a good light and to enable the rest of the day for other exploration of the area. Nearer our departure we made contact with Maverick and learned that weather and all else permitting our flight would be the first of the day at 08:00 am and that we needed to be there 30 minutes before. We also phoned as requested the day before our flight to check in. We arrived early on the day at 07:20 am and checked in. We were weighed as part of the process and then waited with anticipation. Shortly before our flight our pilot Daniel, called or name out along with the remaining passenger - 6 in total leaving one seat empty. We were escorted out onto the tarmac where we had our photographs taken by Maverick in our individual family groups with the pilot before being allocated our seats and given a safety briefing. We assume seats were allocated on the basis of balancing the weight of the group but it avoided a free for all over who would sit where. The ECO-Star (EC130) helicopter made by Airbus Helicopters was a eight seater - the pilot plus six passengers i.e. two rows of four. My wife sat in the front next to the pilot and me behind him next to the window. That said every seat had a great view. As wearing headphones is necessary in order to communicate we were all able to interact with the pilot who gave a great commentary. The whole flight including audio was recorded using a camera mounted on the front of the helicopter meaning that those of us who wanted to could purchase a copy along with a nice plaque including the pre-flight photograph. Following take off we departed from the Grand Canyon South Rim over the Kaibab National Forest before reaching the rim of the Canyon that dropped away before us ....... this really was a spectacular view and incredible feeling. Flying over the Canyon we could see for miles. The North rim and eastern edge then cam into view something that many visitors don't see and nor would we if it hadn't been for the flight. We then followed the Colorado River and were able to see the water flowing at the foot of the Canyon. Flying through the widest and deepest part of the Canyon we were able to take as many photographs as we liked and in my case GoPro footage of almost the entire flight. Crossing the Colorado River we left the Grand Canyon and returned to base. On landing and once it was safe to alight we were able to take our own photographs around the helicopter including with our pilot. We then returned to the terminal building where those of us who wanted could purchase a DVD recording of the flight and or plaque with our pre-flight photograph as a memento. We don't ordinarily purchase such things but this was a very special experience so we can now relive it with friends and family. We have some amazing memories and great photographs. It was an incredible, beautiful and absolutely awesome experience that we would highly recommend. If you want to do this don't wait until it's too late plan ahead to be sure you can get a flight. People at the office and the pilot very nice, however if you get a back middle seat your view is of the mesa/plateau above the canyon, the back of the seats in front of you and if the people by the back seat window lean back you'll get a view of the top of the canyon side. Never did get a full view of the canyon. Seat location is random - computer distributes by body weight and not knowing the other people on the trip - well I wouldn't pay the price again. Maybe the company should limit the passenger count to provide all with a proper view.
