Second visit just as interesting as first. No tour guides due to COVID. Museum very interesting especially restoration of bones and debris found in pits. Several movies, but require supplement charges. Make sure to visit pit #9 where excavation work continues. More focused on kids and science groupies, but enough to keep any kid (young and old) interested. Lots of photo ops inside and outside of museum. Since the Academy Museum, LA County Museum of Art, Petersen Auto Museum, and La Brea Tar Pits are all within walking distance, found parking at the Petersen Auto Museum for the day was the most convenient. Parking entrance on S Fairfax Ave side of auto museum. Total of $21 for the entire day which kept the rental car off the streets; plus a $4 dollar discount if you visit the Peterson Museum.

Very much worth a visit. The history is amazing and interesting, and kids of all ages should love it, but especially those interested (or, once interested) in dinosaurs. The museum provide some excellent context and hands on activities. You can even see live scientists analyzing the cleaning fossils found recently. They're in a windowed room for everyone to see. (Cool to watch, but that would be some boring, painstaking work.) Note that the outside (the actual tar pits) are free to visit as long as the gates are open. You're paying for the movie, which is great and provides some good history and context. The outside area is open to the streets, so homeless people (a real problem in LA) tend to make use of the green open spaces as well. I wanted to see it since I was a kid (I'm 51 now), so I brought the family and they enjoyed it as well.

Purchased tickets on Tripadvisor rather than on site website. It was a little bit of cost savings but I will take every penny I could get. Had big family visiting site. Nine people total with two children and one toddler. It was a great way to spend a couple hours. The museum was nice and my favorite was the fish bowl where the archeological team was actively working. Was able to re-enter the museum the same day after my family has left for their other activities. Need a hand stamp from the front desk for this. Should have received a hand stamp upon entrance. It allowed for some extra time to explore the museum. My favorite place to be though is outside watching the tar pits. There is always activity since it is an active site. The tar is always coming up in new areas. It is fascinating to watch. Overall, will definitely return just because this is a unique find in the city.
