C.M. Russell Museum
Born in 1864 in St. Louis, Charles M. Russell grew up fascinated by tales of the Wild West. He traveled to Montana in 1880 and made a life on the frontier, working first as a cowboy and then a night wrangler, leaving his days free to observe and sketch working cowboys. Once a full-time artist, Russell moved with his wife the short distance from Cascade to Great Falls, where he built his home and studio. Over the course of his life he created around 4,000 works of art that reside in both public and private collections throughout the country.    Although primarily focused on the works of the local artist, the C.M. Russell Museum also includes numerous collections of other western artists whose works complemented the themes that so intrigued Russell throughout his lifetime as well as the original Russell Home and Studio.

Very disappointing. We went several hundred miles out of our way and used up a day of our vacation to visit this museum. We then went to the Montana Historical Museum in Helena the next day. Compared to the Montana Historical Museum in Helena, the Russell Museum in Great Falls is small with mostly mediocre paintings. We spent less then an hour there. I have been a Charlie Russel fan for 50+ years, as my grandfather had over a dozen prints on his walls. We highly anticipated the trip to the Russell Museum, and we were bitterly disappointed. It is clear this museum is struggling, and not getting local community support. For example, there are no signs on the freeway nor any signs in town directing tourists to the museum! The museum is clean, Covid-19 aware. Friendly staff. Unfortunately this museum should be shut down and the artwork moved to the Montana Historical Museum in Helena.

Despite having to wear a mask while at the C.M. Russell Museum, our visit there was outstanding. The staff was helpful and friendly, and the exhibits were great. We enjoyed the gift shop very much. We toured the gallery, which was laid out in a very orderly way with a nice flow from one area to the next, and there was lots to see. We also toured the family home and Russell's studio, which were both interpreted well. We spent three hours and it was well worth it!

We spent a couple of days in Great Falls as part of a road trip to 5 national parks. We visited the museum on the only rainy day of our trip. I am very glad we had rain and ended up at the museum. We were not familiar with Charlie Russell and his work; the museum does a wonderful job of not only showcasing much of his art work but explaining his life story and how he came to be the renowned artist that he was. Also included in this story of his life is the huge role his wife Nancy played in his commercial artistic success. Absolutely fascinating story. Major bonus in visiting the museum is also seeing the Russell's home and artist studio adjacent to the museum. The buildings are the actual buildings and the interior spaces have been recreated in incredible detail. It's like stepping back in time into Charlie and Nancy's lives there in Great Falls. Highly recommend visiting this museum if you are in the area.
