My wife and I went on the Fair Wind Morning Kealakekua Bay Snorkel Cruise a few days ago. We went on the basis of a recommendation in a book about snorkeling on the big island that we carried with us and used a lot. We're almost completely satisfied with this excursion. You get plenty of time in the water at Kealakekua Bay, 2 1/2 hours, excepting the time you climb out to grab lunch (and warm up). The bay itself is an excellent place to snorkel, with protected calm clear water, plenty of reef, and plenty of fish. They serve breakfast on the way down and lunch while there; both satisfy. There were only 35 or so passengers, so neither the boat nor the bay felt crowded - although this would not be the case if the boat were at capacity (maybe 100??) The crew were competent, helpful, and friendly. The dock is easy to find. Checkin was very fast. They supply snorkel gear if you don't have your own. Earlier I wrote "almost completely satisfied". The reasons for "almost" - not enough to ding my rating down from excellent - are as follows. One is that there's no parking dedicated to this cruise - you park along the side of the road on the way down to the dock. If there are are other things going on in the near vicinity, like the Wednesday Art and Craft market, you might have to walk a fair distance to get from where you park your car down to the dock. Two is that I did not see, or hear any mention of, reef fish identification cards on the boat. (This could have been my miss, not theirs.) Three is that they limit you to a fairly small corner of the bay, with no stated reason for that. It's still a great snorkel, but it would have been nice to be able to range more widely.
