Greatland Adventures

The aurora borealis is one of the most amazing natural wonders this world has to offer. Join us on a quest to view and photograph the northern lights in and around the Anchorage area. We will use our luxury tour vehicle as a base camp as well as a state of the art portable winter shelter complete with heater, chairs, hot drinks and snacks. We use modern technology to forecast both the space and earth weather each night. The tour only operates on nights that have a reasonable expectation for the lights to be visible. While we cannot guarantee you will see the aurora, if we do operate the tour we have over a 90% success rate of seeing the northern lights. You only pay if we operate the tour. This tour is designed for anyone who has viewing the northern lights on their bucket list including both sightseers and serious photographers. Aurora photography instruction as well as Aurora portraits are provided. Tours generally depart at 9 pm and return at 3 am.

Tim was our guide. Very sweet and friendly. Quite knowledgeable about Northern lights. We only saw a little aurora which was disappointing but no fault of Tim The experience was great

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are glad we could find Aurora for you on your tour and that you enjoyed your time with Tim. Unfortunately, there is no way for any human to know what the northern lights will do more than 1 hour in advance after we get the solar wind readings from the Discover satellite. Our job is to comfortably and safely get you in the right place at the right time to have the best chance to see them. After that, it is up to nature. Thank you again for joining us. We hope you can come back and try again for a bigger show. We always tell anyone who will listen that they must keep trying if they haven't witnessed a strong aurora display. There is no way to know in advance when these will happen and the more times you are looking, the better your chances are to witness the magic!

I have to say our experience was nothing short of amazing! Our tour guide Dana was just amazing. She was so informative, her passion and energy was infectious. She made sure she drove to an area where she knew we would have a great view. She had snacks and warm drinks. I so highly recommend this tour !!

This was the second time my wife and I went on a Greatland Adventures northern lights tour. The first time was two years ago out of Anchorage. Jacob was our guide. He took us to a location where the sky was initially clear. When the clouds started rolling in, he took us to another location where we ultimately experienced the northern lights! The experience was awesome, but the lights were more on the horizon than overhead. We wanted to try to see if we could get a better view of the lights, so this time we flew into Fairbanks. Fairbanks is positioned right under the aurora oval. The night we signed up for was cloudy, so they rescheduled us for the next night. That night was also cloudy, so they rescheduled us again. I like that they try to make sure you have the best opportunity to see the lights during your available time window. Finally, the skies cleared up and we went out for our tour. Our guide that night was Cody. It was crazy cold (-30 F), but that made for a cloudless night. Cody took us out to their viewing property, which is about a 45 minute drive out of Fairbanks. The property has a viewing deck and heated yurts where you can stay warm while you're waiting to view the lights. The activity level was initially low, but Cody took some photos of us that still showed the aurora. About 1:00 am, the activity level increased and we were treated to an amazing display of the aurora borealis! If you are thinking about coming up to Alaska to see the northern lights, I highly recommend Greatland Adventures!
