The only black-sand beach in the Hilo region provides relaxed swimming, sheltered rock pools for beautiful snorkeling and excellent surfing.

Lava from Mauna Kea has formed a natural seawall at Richardson Ocean Park, making it a sheltered beach that is perfect snorkeling with giant sea turtles, monk seals and abundant sea life. Rock pools that fill at high tide make for shallow, detached swimming holes at low tide. Snorkel in the pools, without the stress of swell or currents.

Understandable, Hilo Ocean needs to first check out the abilities of all, but the first beach you go to is fairly boring. All I could think was: “If this is it, man did I get fleeced.” Despite this being called ‘beach snorkelling’, I thought there would be a boat, too. Luckily, we were not there long. The second place we went was fantastic with very colourful corals and fish, some I haven’t seen before. I would put it on par with snorkelling I did in the Maldives. Adam was a great guide. In observing him, despite him having a laid back nature, like a mother hen, he knew where each of were at all times. Yes it is a public beach, complete with parking, but would I have fond it on my own? Probably not. For those snorkelling on the Kona side, try Hilo. And all the rain. You are in the water, what difference does it make.

DONT BOOK!! 5 min trip by van to 2 public !!! beaches- 50 min snorkling on public beaches in town - no boat - never worth the money - unless guide devin is kind and professionell

Devin was so knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed the amazing coral reefs, fish and turtles, as well as the history and culture he shared as we went along. Truly amazing! We plan to return and snorkel with him again in other places on the island.
