Our tour host, Alaskan Tour Guides, recommended this side trip for my wife, our son and daughter-in-law, and me during our recent visit to Alaska. We met our guide, Justin, at the Portage station of the Alaska Railroad. After a short trip into the back country accessible only by rail, Justin took us to the shore of the lake at the base of the massive Spencer Glacier. We boarded a large air inflated raft and he paddled us around the lake with its very large floating icebergs calved from the glacier....spectacular! We then floated out of the lake and about 5 miles down the Placer River to our exit point. A couple of spots along the river with rapids but nothing serious enough to get wet. Justin beached the raft at our exit point and the train stopped alongside in the middle of nowhere and picked us up for the return trip to the Portage station. He was experienced, very knowledgeable and helpful. The weather was great and the wilderness experience with almost no one in sight was a real memory maker. I strongly recommend this tour as a "must do" for anyone visiting the Kenai Peninsula area of Alaska.
