Battery & White Point Gardens

Once an oyster bed known as White Point, this area was developed on landfill specifically for a park. It served as a battery of cannons during the Civil War and was also the site of the execution of Steve Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate.

Evans was great, very lively and passionate about the great city of Charleston. Especially enjoyed the stories about abolitionists and matriarchs in Charleston’s history. Highly recommend.

We took the Hidden Gems tour with Evans, hoping to see and hear some of Charleston's history that is off the beaten path. This tour did not disappoint! As we walked through the streets of Charleston Evans, a many generational resident, knew everyone from the ladies selling sweetgrass baskets to the postal worker delivering mail. Evans not only told us the history of the buildings we were looking at he also told us about the people and their stories, both past and present. It was obvious that he loves Charleston and continues to research her history. Several times one of us asked a question about a building that we were passing and Evans knew the story behind that home. The tour was not just a memorized script but a man passionate about the city that he loves wanting to share that with visitors. I would highly recommend that you take a tour with Evans!!

An absolutely delightful experience. An off “the beaten path” tour of homes and neighborhoods. Relaxed walking with loads of intimate details and obscure facts. Evans was enthusiastic and patient. He was in total command of the present and past. His recall for details and amusing anecdotes was unbelievable. We were fortunate to just be a party of four, our own private audience.
