My husband and I booked a four-hour ice fishing tour with Rod's Alaskan Guide Service and just got back from our trip to Fairbanks.
Rod was responsive via email (super helpful and important since we were planning this trip for early in the winter season) and helped us in so many ways. He kept us updated on the progress of the ice (if it wasn't thick enough, wouldn't be able to fish because of the thickness of the ice), and once he was confident of the weather, he told us to go ahead and book online.
He also provided the BEST referral for cold weather gear/clothing with Martha at Alaska Element which was how we ended up getting our parkas, mitts, bibs/pants, and boots for the entire trip. You won't necessarily need it IN the cabin/tent, but you will want it walking to/from/etc.
Rod provided directions the day before as promised and we were able to follow them easily to meet with his son Rod, who was helpful and friendly. The ice wasn't thick enough for their big "permanent" fishing cabin but he set up a smaller tent with heater and it was totally warm enough for us to even take off our parks and mitts and just fish in our other layers (base layer + sweater layer + ski bib + gloves).
It was fun! It was way easier than I expected ice fishing would be (with small rods) but I guess it was a great intro to fishing. There were tons of fish below us though they were a little smaller than I expected, it was still a lot of fun to reel them in. We learned the lake below us was stocked every year with a variety of fish - and we each caught some silver salmon, a small king salmon, char, and lots of rainbow trout. We "got" to keep one each to cook since they didn't want it to get wasted and Rod cooked it for us on a grill right outside (in addition to providing a reindeer sausage/hot dog and seasoning, etc.).
We definitely didn't need the full four hours, even with a bunch of time taking pictures of the amazing frozen lake and landscape around, so we were really content with our 2-3 hours there and happy to head out.
Such an interesting experience, and one that you can't do everywhere! Would definitely recommend it for a daytime activity while you're in Fairbanks chasing the Northern Lights. Thanks Rod and family!
