My sister and I took Colleen's tour of the French Quarter. Started off with history of the Crescent City -- very practical and entertaining at the same time. Proceeded to Cafe du Monde. Beignets being cut and fried, highly entertaining! Mural highlights -- gave us insights into who was who in New Orleans history. Walked over to the places in the Quarter that survived the fires that dated from 1790s. Learned most about how homes were built at the stop. Visited Madame Jean's Legacy -- lovely spot. I thought I knew New Orleans since my research takes me there often, but Colleen's tour taught me more than I ever would've assumed I still NEEDED to know. AND, as if the lovely tour in the steaming heat wasn't enough, after we returned to the starting point (do tour the house if you have the opportunity), I grabbed some cash from my purse for a tip and put it folded up into Colleen's hand. To my absolute shock and embarrassment, I had given her a one hundred dollar bill that I had intended to use for the trip home. My sister remembered where Colleen said she was going after the tour and she went there to find her and explain -- I was in need of a fainting couch! Colleen hadn't looked at the bill either and, after a quick exchange of bills, a good laugh was had by all. Thank goodness for lovely Colleen. What could've been a very dark moment turned into something transcendent and memorable beyond my imaginings. Take her tour! You'll be as amazed as we were.

On a hot Sunday morning, I took the Friends of the Cabildo walking tour through the Marigny neighborhood of New Orleans, directly adjacent to the French Quarter. Our tour guide was Nancy T. She was a perfect tour guide, getting everyone in our small group involved in discovering the history of this neighborhood. This is a tour to make you realize the depth of New Orleans' rich history and culture. My favorite street was Pauger St. Beautiful buildings, many of which have great stories that Nancy shared with us. Let's face it, most of us just want to have fun on a walking tour. This one was entertaining, and it was highly informative. Plus, our guide miraculously managed to keep us in the shade on this hot late morning. Five stars, well deserved!

Our two hour stroll through the French Quarter was guided by a well educated and passionate volunteer. The Friends of the Cabildo tours fund improvements to the local museums and help keep history accurate and alive in New Orleans. I appreciated that the tour was designed by the historians at the state museum. There was no need to sign up in advance. They brought on another guide to break the group into a reasonable size. The guide provided us with local insights into the culture, economic and political developments in New Orleans of the centuries while ensuring that we noticed the architectural details we were walking by. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting an authentic orientation to New Orleans.
