I had heard a lot of good things about the Friends of the Cabildo French Quarter walking tour and it didn't disapoint. Our tour guide, John, was a retired English teacher and gave us lots of interesting tidbits about the French Quarter. He also kept us engaged by asking us questions, too. I have been to the French Quarter many times before, but learned a lot of new information. At two hours, it can get overwhelming after awhile, but I still enjoyed it. The tour ticket includes a visit to the 1850 house. I would recommend touring the house first, because I was kind of wiped out after the tour and felt I couldn't enjoy it as much.

My wife and I have been on many tours similar to this in numerous cities, with only one ending up this way. New Orleans is a fascinating city that has so much history. Naturally, we decide to take a tour of the French Quarter as it is one of the most iconic location in the city and Friends of the Cabildo seemed to be a good fit. Out tour guide, Jane, almost immediately started injecting her current and past political views into almost every element of the tour. If I wanted to hear politics discussed, I could stay in a hotel and watch pundits on cable news channels. The rhetoric went on and on and twice I told my wife we need to just walk away; we were wanting to know about the history of the area, not our guides biases. To her credit, there were some interesting facts prevented, but it got to the point where we were just waiting for the next political slam instead of enjoying an oratory of the culture and history of the French Quarter and New Orleans. Perhaps another tour guide would have been better, but we won't go back and find out.

I'm a New Orleans local who was asked by some out of town friends to take them on a tour of the French Quarter. Not being good with architecture, historical facts and dates, nor humorous stories...I decided best to have a "professional" give the tour. (BTW all tour guides are well-trained volunteers who do this for the love of sharing their city with others! All monies collected from tours go to support of the Cabildo Museum.) Our tour guide, Lisa (gives a tour first Saturday of each month), was fabulous! Not only did she have complete command of the facts, dates and architecture....she was wryly funny about "her city" and shared some very entertaining historical and current day stories of life in New Orleans. My out of town friends agreed with me that this tour was a great way to see and learn about the French Quarter and New Orleans and that Lisa made it one of the highlights of their trip! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!! (Also as this is an outdoor tour, we were able to quickly run into a bar along the tour route so we could imbibe in that great New Orleans tradition of walking around with an adult beverage in our "go-cups".....only in New Orleans!)
