Lower Yellowstone River Falls
Lower Falls, the biggest waterfall in Yellowstone at 308-feet tall, is the most famous waterfall in the park. The canyon’s colors were created by hot water acting on volcanic rock. It was not these colors, but the river’s yellow banks at its distant confluence with the Missouri River, that occasioned the Minnetaree Indian name which French trappers translated as roche jaune, yellow stone. The canyon has been rapidly downcut more than once, perhaps by great glacial outburst floods.

Brushbuck Wildlife Tours seems to be a very professionally run business with top guides. Right from the time we made our reservation (months in advance) they were checking in with us to confirm and check lunch preferences. Our tour guide Seth was on his 4th day of working with Brushbuck and you would have thought he had been doing this job forever. He arrived at our pickup point a few minutes early and made you feel very comfortable right from the start. He was informative in so many areas beyond just wildlife and really helped acquaint you with so many park highlights. He was open to what the group wanted to see, BUT, certainly knew the best highlights to focus on. Was sensitive about rest-stop timing, snack and lunch time and when we saw we were going overtime, made sure the group was all good with that - so great ongoing communications. We never had the sense that we were on some fixed timetable, and took advantage of circumstances to help dictate the day's schedule. One example was we came across a bear that took down a baby elk (the capture happened just out of sight). Group just hunkered down for some time there to see nature take its course, and rather than picnic at a preplanned location, we ate right there. There were plenty of animal sightings throughout the day, but we also got a great sampling of the park's thermal features and waterfalls too. Food and snacks BTW were good and ample. This was a great way for us to get our bearings in the parks and to sharpen our scanning skills for animal sightings. Great work Brushbuck and Seth!
