Been on this trek 3 times. Something different every time. The hike into the aligator holes is one of the coolest things I've ever done. The guides Garl and Don are super friendly and knowledgeable and conservation minded. The ocean kayaking with wine at sunset the night walk after...can't say enough about this jem of an adventure. Thank you so much Garl for your hospitality and passion for what you do. You sir are the bomb xo Patricia and Larry xo

Had we not taken this tour we would have been disappointed with the Everglades. Our guide (Don) was extremely knowledgeable. The kayaking was through a beautiful mangrove forest - we would definitely take the tour again on our next visit (as it is always changing and adapting based on the season and day to day conditions.

It was Tuesday, November 17, and I had the extreme good fortune of being the only one booking a full day tour. I not only got Garl all to myself, but I was able to have major input into the schedule. This was truly amazing because I am a kayaker and all I wanted to do was kayak, kayak and kayak some more. I had spent the night in Key Largo, but I decided to drive down to Florida City in the morning. The pickup time for this trip in Key Largo was at 10 a.m. but Florida City was at 11. It turned to be an excellent decision because I just missed a major traffic event between Key Largo and the coast and had an hour's less travel in the evening. The day initially started out quite hot, muggy and sunny. We made a quick stop at the RobertIsHere fruitstand; by the time we reached Everglades National Park, the sky was starting to cloud up and the temperature to dip. We hopped out of the van a couple of times along the road to check out the wildlife. On one particular occasion, Garl snapped a picture of me only a few feet from a gnarly alligator. I had my own cameras and Garl had a camera of his own with a huge lens. Garl knew all the places the critters seemed to hang out. He was a fountain of knowledge and a lot of fun to be with. I also entrusted my life to him and I do not do that lightly. I was eager to get on the water and soon, we doused ourselves in deet, pulled on our mosquito suits and lowered our kayaks into the fresh water. It was heaven kayaking in the Everglades with Garl, through the sawgrass and once, only a foot from an alligator cruising by as Garl pointed out the flora and fauna. We explored paths off the beaten track. I NEVER could have done this without an experienced guide I trusted to the extent I trusted Garl. The sky was getting darker and darker as we finally headed for shore. I elected to bypass the slog to the alligator hole (the mosquitoes were out in force and the water was quite deep--there had been a lot of rain), so our next stop was Flamingo. Our goal was to kayak the salt water before the rain started coming down. The driving distances within the park are quite lengthy and I was very happy to be driven by someone who knew his way around. By the time we arrived at Flamingo, the winds had picked up and Garl was wearing two or three mosquito suits because the temperature was dropping very fast. To my great disappointment, Garl declared it too windy to kayak the salt water. Instead, we headed for the Anhinga trail. The Anhinga trail was wonderful, even as rain was starting to spit. The rain propelled us along that much faster. At the conclusion of the Anhinga trail, Garl spotted a coral snake skittering around a tree trunk and he PICKED IT UP to show me. That is the most poisonous snake in the park. At that point, I was assured that I was with an absolute professional. We stopped at a few bird sanctuaries along the way back. We got to photograph spoonbills, night herons and other exotic birds. Unfortunately, I did not get to do the night walk because the weather was getting more miserable by the minute, Garl was freezing and even I, a Torontonian, was pretty cold. I guess I will have to come back.
