As described by most other reviewers, this is an excellent tour of the everglades and should not be missed. I did the tour last month and had a wonderful time. If I was writing a review only based on the day I spent in the Everglades I would give it five stars. Unfortunately, my experience in communicating with the company after the tour has been disappointing. When I booked the tour it was mentioned that the tour guide would take pictures during the tour which I would be able to purchase later. I did the tour in mid December and since I was planning to purchase the photos I didn’t take any pictures myself. I waited for them to contact me regarding the photos for a couple of weeks and then sent them an email. After not receiving a reply I contacted them again through email and by filling the inquiry form on their website. I waited another week but didn’t receive any reply. Finally, I messaged them through their facebook page and received a reply that they were having some trouble with their camera/computer and would get back to me regarding the photos. I waited for a few more days before asking for an update last week and haven’t received a reply yet. It has been more than 40 days since the tour and I don’t think I will get the photos now. I can understand if the photos were lost due to technical issues but it is very disappointing that they haven’t replied to a single email (except the facebook message) over the last month especially because they always replied promptly when I was initially booking the tour. It was an excellent tour but their communication after the tour has been very poor. I would certainly recommend everyone take their own pictures on the tour instead of relying on them. I will post an update if I do end up getting the photos but I really doubt I would get them now.

Unfortunately we had camera troubles in December (which is also our busiest month of the year, I apologize for any communication delay). One of the days of photos I think was corrupted on the photo card and I did absolutely everything I could to try and retrieve or salvage them. I sent the guest some nice general everglades photos with our apologies- it’s literally never happened before in all the years of doing tours and sending photos. I did look back and I in no way disbelieve that the guest tried to email but I don’t see those communications until I got the Facebook message. So our genuine apologies for the unforeseen technical issues, which are resolved now. We do strive for excellent service and do our best to deliver that. As a small business with limited staff that can be a challenge at times, but we do our best and try to make our guests as happy as we possibly can.

Before booking our tour we spoke on the phone with a very helpful person, and then visited their tiki hut at Richard is Here (a fruit stand near Florida City where the tours meet up) and had a chance to see the water gear and get more questions answered by another very helpful person. After booking we also got an email advising us what to bring. We ended up buying some cheap water shoes in Key Largo, although Garl's has a good selection of loaners available. My wife and I were the only ones signed up for our tour, so we had a great private tour. Garl's knowledge of the Everglades is amazing - he obviously loves this place and knows it like the back of his hand. Our first stop was a walk into the "River of Grass" and hike through the water to a cypress dome. The water was crystal clear and not too cold, considering it was January. The plants in the cypress dome were incredible. Then we drove to a large freshwater pond surrounded by mangroves. We paddled through channels in the mangroves and saw alligators and a giant crocodile (nicknamed "Croczilla"). Then we drove to Flamingo where manatees were cavorting near the marina. The water was cloudy so we couldn't see very well. We opted not to do the salt-water kayaking in the bay because it was windy and the water wasn't clear. Instead, we chose to do another water hike to a different cypress dome - this one loaded with exotic ferns and orchids. We saw and heard a barred own and heard pig frogs. No gators, though - water levels were high for this time of year, so the gators were elsewhere. We ended up with a dusk hike at another pond where you could see a variety of birds and fish. More importantly we got a much better understanding of what the Everglades is all about and got to see it from a vantage point rarely seen by outsiders - what a privilege! Because we were there in January, bugs weren't a problem - there were a few, but bug spray was provided. If you go, make sure you bring water and a lunch (and/or snacks). There are no stops for food, but you can pretty much eat whenever you like. The tours leave at 11 am and return by about 8 pm or earlier. You need to be fit enough to paddle a kayak and slog through water that can be waist deep. You will get wet! But, quick-dry clothing is provided. Bring some extra clothes along to change into when you're done. What you can see and do depends a lot on the weather and time of year. Water levels go down in the winter months, but are highly variable. There are no guarantees of seeing any particular kind of wildlife - this is Mother Nature, not a zoo! Our tour guide went out of his way to accommodate what we wanted to do - of course this is easier since we were the only participants, but I got the impression that they really want to try to please their guests.

We are glad you had a great time- we strive to make sure everyone has a great experience regardless of group size (which we try to keep at 8 or fewer so that everyone has a fantastic adventure). The Everglades are ever changing, so I hope you are able to visit us again and do some more exploring.

An epic 8-hour adventure in Everglades National Park! My mom, my sister, and I have a yearly tradition that every Thanksgiving we visit a new National Park. This year, we chose the Everglades. This was the optimal tour to take (and I believe one of the only ones there is like this!) where you can really delve deep (literally...) in the flora, fauna, and natural history of the park. BUT...This tour is not for the faint of heart... please read below! The tour consisted of: +45 minutes of driving each way into the park +A 45-minute "slog" through 3 ft+ of water to an Alligator Hole / Cyprus Dome. Be ready to get wet! +A 2 hour strenuous kayak in the Flamingo Bay +A 45 minute additional kayak in a fresh water lake Here were trip highlights! HIGHLIGHTS... +You are given head-to-toe fishing/water gear to wear and at first you're like, wait WHY? And then you're like OMG! Because they actually take you on a hike in 3 ft + of water into a Cyprus Dome / Alligator Hole (yes, you heard right), and it's just like JURASSIC PARK! So much fun. This was the best part of the adventure by far. It felt like we had gone back in time. We even saw a huge alligator at the beginning of the hike who was living in a pipe in the side of the road. +WE SAW LIVE MANATEES at Flamingo Bay marina!!!! This has been a life-long dream for our family and for the first time, we saw these adorable creatures frolicking and playing in the wild. +The freshwater paddle at dusk with the stars and moon shining above! SUGGESTIONS... We had a lot of fun today with our jovial and very intelligent guide (Eric), but definitely have some ideas for how to make the tours even better! +It would have been nice for our guide to gather all eight of us together BEFORE getting into the vehicle for a nice orientation to (1) ask if anyone had any medical conditions (my mom is a diabetic) and (2) to introduce ourselves to each other (!) and (3) to give us a run down of the timing and activities of the day. While we got information about what we would be doing in our initial trip booking, there wasn't a good rundown of how much TIME and how intense each activity was going to be. We were all slightly surprised at each part of the trip. Thankfully, we had an athletic and jovial group. But, for example, on hour 2 of our STRENUOUS kayak in the Flamingo Bay (that we honestly weren't mentally prepared for), we were all rather grumpy that it was taking so long... as we were kayaking against the current and we hadn't had lunch. +The guides need to understand that with the AC blasting in the back of the van, they need to SPEAK UP :) so that the passengers in the back can hear them when they're talking about important information about the park on the car ride to the park. +We would have liked more stories about the park mixed in with the natural history. +It would have been nice to get an orientation about our gear / water / what we needed, etc. +More warning about how high the water was going to be for the slog +PLEASE HAVE GROUP EAT LUNCH BEFORE THE SALT WATER KAYAK. We needed the energy and when we didn't eat -- afterwards, we were all really depleted and with low blood sugar. In general, please re-evaluate the timing/schedule of the trip to be more realistic for all age groups. +Guides need to be better about gathering group on the kayaks to communicate information - oftentimes, people would miss out on key facts and stories... +It would be nice if you guys provided a nice lunch for the group. I honestly would have paid more, and would have appreciated this nice detail/customer service. +I don't think that the fresh water paddle was necessary - all the taking down and packing up of the kayaks was exhausting? +For the toast at the end of the trip, please include sparkling cider for non-alcohol drinkers (like our fam!) FINAL THOUGHTS... This is a great tour, but please train guides to do a better orientation for the group, set better expectations, and create a more realistic and less strenuous schedule that leaves your customers elated vs. exhausted. Thank you!! Kate

Wow that is a very complete review, thanks for taking the time! It's impossible to respond point by point but I appreciate the time you took to post, and I think others will as well. We have been doing the trip for a decade and a half and don't really hear issues with elated vs exhausted often. We do our best to describe the tour accurately and let people know that at least a moderate level of fitness is required. We don't provide lunches because of food allergies and people like to bring their own food. Most people let us know if they have a special need or medical condition. We are a laid back and friendly crew, very approachable, so any concerns can certainly be addressed with the guide. Whether we stop and sit to eat or eat on the go depends on the day and activities going on- everyone is welcome to eat whenever they like throughout the day. The freshwater kayak is one of the highlights of our trip, as said by many prior reviewers. Everyone has their favorite part! Some people would do cypress domes all day, some people love the mangrove tunnels and others can't get enough of the saltwater. That's why we offer so many activities. You get a full range of what the Everglades has to offer.
