Ground Zero Museum Workshop

The Ground Zero Museum Workshop in the Meat-Packing District on West 14th Street features stunning images, rare video and remnants from the Ground Zero Recovery Period, all packed into an intimate and emotional space. On display are 100 of Gary Marlon Suson's most well-known images, including the charred Genesis 11: Tower of Babylon Bible Page found in the WTC rubble, the Frozen Clock stuck at 10:02am, marking the collapse of the South Tower and several FDNY Honor Guard images. The actual clock itself is also on display in the museum. The only all-access, sanctioned photographer at Ground Zero, Suson's one-of-a-kind, 3-D photo installations place viewers into the "hole" at Ground Zero. Visitors are also allowed the rare opportunity to pick up and hold World Trade Center steel and window glass. Tours are limited to just 25 people, and include a powerful 15-minute video. The Ground Zero Museum is about 5-minutes from Ground Zero via the "E" train. Daily tours last about 90 minutes and include the intimate stories behind 100 images and remnants. This is a "don't-miss" museum that touches the heart of young and old alike. No graphic or morbid images are displayed and the museum is known for its sensitivity to a very tough subject matter. Suitable for children.

It’s not near where it happened and this is not to be confused with The National September 11 Memorial Museum nor the 9/11 Tribute Museum. You start off with a headset explaining what you’re going to witness then a video explaining who Gary is and what he did for the aftermath of 9/11. Gary was the official photographer for ground zero and was also our tour guide. His museum was small but hugely informative. We were able to not only listen to a historical event but interact with it. I’m not sure what other museum could possibly have the artifacts he collected from his time and allow you to touch it. Gary was a very amazing guy who answered everything we asked, treated us like friends and he did all the audio recordings from his experience. It was both very eye opening and moving. To anyone who visits New York, or a local, I highly recommend coming here. If I ever visit New York again, I will be coming back.

What can we say about this place? I wish we could give more stars! What to say? This was an amazing experoence & i wish there were more stars to give! We do not usually buy merchandise but we did here! To bring his photos and stories home with us. This is not at ground zero. This is in Chelsea, near the market. It focuses on the post 9/11 recovery through the photo lens, stories, and artifacts by the official ground zero photographer & recovery task force member Gary Suson. We got to see photographs, touch and see things from ground zero- including glass from the WTC and iron stars of David & crosses which were burned under the radar by Iron workers. There is the clock frozen in time as a reminder of when life changed forever. The photos are powerful & moving and just about everything has audio narration. The artifacts are unique and personal. In a post covid world, where we at times see the worst of humanity, it was heart warming to see photos of when everyone came together & the production of flags could not keep up with the demand. While 9/11 was 20yrs ago, these photos & artifacts brought you back (in a gentle not intense way) in time (floppy disk? And im prerty sure i had same cell phone as is displayed). It is very intimate and personal. Things can be seen, touched, questions asked. We got the special treat/honor of the owner/photographer: Gary Suson being our guide. Which note the museum isn't normally open on Saturdays (covid world) but he opened it so we could visit. We spent so long here looking, listening, and talking with him. I can't imagine the mental toll/trauma of being part of the recovery effort, photographing it, and reliving it for guests. There is a Bible artifact here that gives the story as to his inspiration to continue. It was such an honor and we are so grateful that he captured these photos so the world can see, learn, remember & reflect on the days following 9/11. So glad this place popped up on our Google search and we got to experience this. We highly recommend it! It is a totally different experience & feel than ground zero and you can feel the emotion and love that went into creating this museum. We did this while walking the highline. We went to Chelsea Market then the museum workshop. Super easy! I'm not sure this review does justice, but I do very highly recommend this museum!!
