Shout out to Allison B at Glacier Raft Co.—if you can choose her as your guide, DO IT! She is an experienced leader, encouraging, humble, and explained what was to be done and why before each rapid. She is incredibly familiar with the water and each boulder! She was also so diligent to call all 7 of us on our raft by name. Incredible!
Allison B. knew the answer to most everything rafting related, a good amount of railroad, river and GNP park history, gave great recommendations and had a few interesting/entertaining stories to tell. If she wasn’t sure, she was honest—that is so valuable!
We were the raft at the front and able to watch other rafts go down the rapids after us which was a really cool perspective. Another cool thing about being the lead raft is that you’ll probably see wildlife more closely before it moves on after spotting you. We saw various fish, ducks, birds of prey, and a really squawk happy crow losing his cool to a bald eagle.
Side note: As comical as it would be to topple your entire group into the water, Allison B. will safely and splashily (new word) guide you down the rapids if you follow instructions. You can hop out and swim at another location that is not the rapids.
I definitely recommend the first tour of the day for a few reasons:
1. Allison B. will probably be there. And you want her as your guide. She’s passionate about being a raft guide and creates a unique atmosphere for your raft.
2. Getting into the Glacier area can be really congested the later you go in the day, unless you go after 4pm, but we had no problems getting there around 8am.
3. All the PFDs (life jackets) and helmets get dunked in sanitization bins after use, yay for germ control, but I think the first group of the day is more likely to get dry gear. Yes, you’re going to get wet anyway, but it’s nice to start the trip dry.
Thanks, Glacier Raft Co., for having awesome raft guides like Allison B.!
