Key West Aquarium

Tours offered every half hour throughout the day. (See below for tour types) Shark feedings occur daily at 11am, 1pm, 3pm, and 4:30pm. Touch Tank/Aquarium History: Learn the aquarium history (first opened air aquarium in the United States), the importance of the frescos. Atlantic Shores Interactive Feed: Learn the importance of the mangrove eco system, allow guest the opportunity to feed some of our large game and tropical fish while discussing the variety of fish in the exhibit. Shark Interactive Feeding: Guides will explain the importance of sharks to our waters while allowing guests to feed and touch a live shark! Sea Turtle Conservation Tour: Learn the Aquarium’s role in the conservation efforts of these species. Stingray interactive Feedings: Interact with our stingrays by feeding and petting these animals. The Atlantic Shores Exhibit is a cross section of a near shore mangrove environment. The 50,000 gallon tank holds a variety of tropical fish and game fish.

We went during the heat of the day to get out of the sun. Half the aquarium was under construction or remodeling. When the new section is completed it will be a five star attraction. My one complaint was I didn’t see any list of events posted. We had gone through the exit when we heard the shark feeding was beginning. Overall they are doing great work with ocean conservation.

Seriously, do not be tempted. This is a complete rip off. Almost $20 per person and we were there for about 20 minutes total. There was no one outside selling the tickets (probably because there were no visitors) and then someone walked over blabbing on the phone, sold us the tickets without saying a word to us because he was so busy on a personal call. We went inside and the one person working in there was kind. It's basically a rectangle with like 20 tanks on each side. Some tanks were empty. The middle tanks that were supposed to have sting rays and sea turtles were basically empty. We didn't see a sea turtle anywhere. The only thing outside was a big pond with tarpon in it. That's it. Their gift shop was bigger than the aquarium itself.

Hello Taylor, Thank you for sharing your experience. We have looked into your concerns about the sales rep, our Sales Manager has confirmed we do not have a male sales rep working at the Aquarium. Maybe you are thinking of another attraction since our Aquarium has been averaging between 400-700 visitors per day. We would also like to share some background information about our Aquarium. We are privately operated and privately owned, unlike most aquariums in the United States. Our aquarium content is restricted to species of fish indigenous to the Florida Keys only. Because of our desire to keep our presentation confined to local specimens, we are faced with the prospect of doing all of our own collecting. We have staffed the aquarium with guides who give narrated tours of the entire facility on a scheduled basis as opposed to a ‘tour on your own’ type of facility. We feel that having well versed guides makes it more interesting to our guests and offers a more personal experience. We are constantly adding to and updating our exhibits, updating paint and décor where possible. However, we are a historic aquarium in a historic b [email protected], hosting live animals. The care and well being of these animals takes precedent over any updates or modernizing that could endanger their lives. A few tanks on the walls. Big tanks in the middle. I think the gift shop was bigger than the aquarium. I was hoping for so much more.
