So glad we took the 45 min side trip from Springfield to Mansfield to see this! First stop is the large visitors center to purchase tickets BEFORE you walk or drive to the 2 homes on the tour. The white farmhouse Laura & her family lived in is still just like she left it. Nearly everything is original, so even the doors & knobs can’t be touched by visitors. Fascinating to see the actual desk she wrote all her books from! Enjoyed her needlework pieces around the home, as well as her library. You can get a copy/list of all the books she had on her own shelves in the gift shop. Some tours are big enough that they give you a brochure to self guide through the 2 houses - not merely hear from the docent, though they are available for questions. Read the brochure details of each room as you walk through or you’ll miss something. The houses aren’t that big, but take your time. No interior photography. The Rock House was recently updated with green paint on the exterior windows trim. It was learned that green (not brown) was the original color, so it’s been returned to the same state as Laura’s days in it. We enjoyed both homes (white farm house and the rock house), the 8 minute video, museum, and gift shop. We spent about 2 hrs total here, and then went by the Mansfield cemetery where Laura, her husband, and daughter are buried. My impression of Laura after today: she would have been a wonderful person to know! Down to Earth, hard working, talented, and a caring & compassionate lady. What a treat to take a glimpse into her life.

What a great place to spend some time to hear about the life of a woman who filled your childhood with great books, which led to a wonderful tv show. My husband and I toured both homes. We started at the stone home, and when we arrived, we were the only couple there, but that quickly changed. I actually felt there were too many people in this house at one time for how small the rooms were. We didn't quite finish the first tour, so we could make our way to the main house. The tours are every 30 minutes, and I feel 45 minutes would be more sufficient. Both tour guides were very nice, but when we arrived at the main house, which was 5 minutes early, the guide was rushing us inside, stating that the tour was starting. She did the same to the others who arrived on time, and told them to go into the dining room, while she talked in the kitchen. Due to feeling rushed, she became flustered and really struggled with information throughout half of the tour. Nevertheless, it was fun to see and hear about Laura's life and see her home and belongings. After we finished with the house tours, we visited the museum. They have a large collection of belongings of Laura and her family, and they also show a short film upon entering the museum. If you're a Little House on the Prairie fan, you cannot miss this tour/museum.
