Great communication from the tour operator from the start, I had a number of text messages confirming pick up location and what to bring.
Pick up was prompt. We were shuttled to near the base of Mauna Kea, and transferred to a 4x4 van to go up the mountain. We spent c30mins at the 2800m visitor centre to acclimatise, then drove up the uneven bumpy unpaved road to the 4200m summit. Adan went slowly, so it was safe and not unpleasant. Sunset was great, but was cold even with the jacket they provided.
After sunset, they took us down to the 2800m area again to set up for the star viewing. This is entirely weather dependent!! We got very lucky on our trip. Even though it was raining on our way here and somewhat cloudy at the summit, the night sky was very clear. (Weather forecast was no use here, the mountain’s condition was just so different). We could see the Milky Way, so many constellations and stars, and the Orion Nebula!!! It was unreal. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and passionate, and we had a great time learning about both the science and the stories.
Hot drinks and snacks (cookies and cup noodle) were provided while you are listening and admiring the sky. The photo in the end was great too, good memorabilia, but doesn’t do its justices on how amazing the night sky is. You can download your photos from a Google drive link they sent.
Overall a great experience, we’d recommend to anyone!
