Misty Fjords National Monument

Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

I researched many seaplane excursions in Ketchikan before booking with the best! I bet this company was so tired of me! Lol. Many e-mails, phone calls, and concerns later, it was time to board. I was really nervous about my claustrophobia. No need to worry. I was allowed to sit in first bench seat. It had doors and windows and little air vents in the windows. That was all I needed. I kept this excursion a secret from my husband. What a surprise! He even got to sit in the co-pilot seat, where he was able to see mountain goats in the snow. Very reputable company. Adam is a very experienced pilot; trust me, I did a background check. Sorry, Michelle, for driving y’all nuts. He made sure we had a trip of a lifetime! The fjords were beautiful! We’ll never forget this exceptional experience. Thanks!!

We spent an amazing morning with Michelle flying over the Misty Fjords. It was shortly after a seaplane crash in Ketchikan and I thought briefly about canceling. I’m so thrilled that I didn’t because it was so beautiful, a hit with all of our kids (ages 9-17) and one of the best excursions I’ve ever experienced. I never once felt uneasy or unsafe, nor did the kids. The Fjords were beyond beautiful to see from the air and our landing on a lake in the middle was a peaceful, serene experience. My youngest son summed it up best “this is the best day of my life. Michelle and everyone at Island Wings made our journey simple and worry free from start to finish. I hope I get to go back and do it again someday!!! Highly, highly recommend!!!

Dear nickim396, I am happy to hear you and your family had such a good time flying with me, and it's especially meaningful coming from the kids... some can be a tough crowd to please on occasion! My hope is that the accident will inspire the flying public to do more research on the specific pilots they fly with as you have done. Alaska is an amazing place both to visit and to live. I was only going to be here for one summer back in 1985 when I came up as a college kid to work. After getting one look at this landscape from the air, I knew I would never be happy in an airline job, so I stayed. All I can say is, it's been a long summer! My wife and I took the Misty Fjords tour with Michelle in her meticulously restored 1959 DeHavilland Beaver. Even though I am a pilot, this was the flight of a lifetime! If you are coming to Ketchikan on a cruise ship, make sure you book this tour directly with Island Wings. The seaplane tour the Cruises offer can’t compare, less time and more money. Michelle is passionate about her work and it shows. We will return!

Dear Traveler362739, Happy to hear you enjoyed your flight with me to Misty Fjords! I am certain as a pilot you understand what it takes to upkeep an airplane. Many non-pilots wonder about flying around in a 1959 airplane. They are often unaware of the ongoing mandatory inspections every 100 hours of flight time, the engine changes every other year, the prop change every 3 years, new paint, new upholstery, new radios, new pontoons, the list goes on. Maintenance is by far my largest expense, but then it is my life and my livelihood! Money well spent! I wish you blue skies and fair winds in your own flying! Thanks again for coming along with me!
