Misty Fjords National Monument

Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

You're going to Ketchikan. You're wondering whether you should go on a seaplane right. Answer: YES! You're looking at different companies, many of which have plenty of 5 star reviews. Should you choose Island Wings: YES! The communication with Shona in the office in the days leading up to the ride was great. I rode with Michelle, who owns and runs Island Wings, and who has been flying here for 30+ years. I was a little nervous to fly on such a small plane, but the second we took off I knew we were in good hands. Michelle was fun, funny, and accommodating. The views are absolutely insane. Book this!

I know how you feel, I was originally going to fly for the airlines back in 1985, but one ride in a floatplane through this country changed everything for me. This excursion was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pictures cannot begin to capture the beauty of the area. We have to admit that we were a little nervous about flying in such a small plane, but the minute we took off we knew that we were in good hands with Michelle. She is not only an excellent pilot, but also extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife and history of the area. We learned a lot along with enjoying some beautiful scenery. We took the tour of the Misty Fjords with Adam as our pilot. It was a lovely relaxing experience flying low of the mountains and waterfalls. When the plane landed, we were allowed to deplane and walk on the shoreline to take photos. Indeed, Michelle and Adam took panoramic photos of us which are terrific. We did not see any animals from the air, but we had lots of fun just experiencing the take offs and landings with the little plane.
