Misty Fjords National Monument

Alaska's Inside Passage or Southeast Alaska is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery on earth. One of its jewels is the majestic Misty Fjords National Monument. Completely road-less and consisting of 2.3 million acres, an area larger than Yellowstone, makes a seaplane tour the only way to comfortably experience the many different levels within the deep, narrow fjords. More dramatic than the Grand Canyon, the fjords are steep walled inlets of the sea. Created by glacial gouging long ago, snow capped, sheer granite cliffs rise dramatically 3,500 out of the sea, ribbonned with waterfalls plummeting sensationally thousands of feet. Nestled within the steep walled canyons, lie pristine bowl-shaped alpine lakes suspended at many different elevations above sea level. Fed by more than 150 inches of misty rain annually, the lush rain forest, made of giant stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar, cling to the rugged rising terrain. Wildlife abounds in the area, with mountain goats and harbor seals being the most frequently sighted animals. Our most popular tour lasts 2 hours and takes you across Revilliagegedo Island over to the Alaskan mainland where the fjords are located, and into the heart of the monument. Headsets with voice communication are provided to passengers so you can chat in flight and ask questions as we fly. For the highlight of the tour, we will land on an alpine lake or on a calm bay at sea level and let passengers get off of the floatplane for a quiet excursion. Relax, stretch your legs and take some photos as you drink in the silence of the vast wilderness. Flying within the Misty Fjords is truly an emotional experience you’ll never forget!!

We had an amazing flight Michelle to Misty Fjord. There were 6 in our plane (our group of 4 and another couple). The weather was great, smooth flight, and amazing views. Michelle gave details and things to watch for throughout the entire flight. We landed near a dock in the middle of the fjord with the opportunity to take pictures. An amazing experience that I would highly recommend to others!

Dear Stephanie L, I am so glad to hear you enjoyed your flight with us! We do landings in many areas of Misty Fjords National Monument, sometimes on lakes, or rocky shorelines on the ocean level, or at the floating dock in the middle of the fjord. We vary the landing areas depending upon the weather, the tide levels - the tide can change as much as 24 feet, the lighting/time of day in the fjord to capture the best photos and the abilities of our passengers to disembark in challenging or less challenging areas. That's why you see the many views passengers have posted...all different landing spots! I like landing in lots of different areas too, keeps things interesting for me! I never get tired of it. I booked this excursion solely based on the positive reviews I read of Michelle. I had serious anxiety about taking this trip, especially bringing my children along, but it was a bucket-list item for my husband. Then, two weeks before our vacation, there was a fatal crash involving cruise-line passengers that nearly led me to cancel it. But I'm glad that we didn't. Michelle is a professional and I really felt that she put our safety first at all times. The flight was smooth (both of my kids fell asleep). I was a nervous wreck, but am still grateful for the experience. My husband loved it. Michelle provided excellent narration throughout the tour and I highly recommend it!!! P.S. Check out the difference between photos 2 and 3 of Rudyerd Bay, taken only 10-20 minutes apart. The weather is changing constantly.

Dear Michelle P, You are not alone, the unfortunate accident here this summer has given many people anxiety! The sad truth is that companies who hire unseasoned pilots to fly in Alaska are the problem. Many pilots come here looking for the dream job of flying floatplanes through this amazing landscape. It is a dream job to be sure, however it can be one of the most challenging places to fly. Weather and rugged terrain play a big part, but the biggest part is the experience level of the pilot. Many pilots who come here have thousands of flight hours, not flying in Alaska, thinking they are good to go here. But flying in Alaska is completely different from flying anywhere else on earth. The fault lies with a company who will send out pilots to fly their passengers who have very little training flying in Alaska especially in the Ketchikan area. And their actions have greatly impacted companies like mine who have done nothing wrong as the flying public becomes afraid. I hope that people will do more research on the pilots they fly with as a result of all this. My goal is to be a very old lady pilot! I 'm glad you added the part about the weather changing. Folks are always asking us what the weather will be like on their trip on some given day. Of course it is impossible to predict the weather so my normal answer is just wait 5 minutes, it will change!
