New York City's Amazing Subway Mosaic Tour - Manhattan

Join award winning mosaic artist Cathleen Newsham for this fascinating tour of Manhattan's stunning subway mosaics.

Do you know there are over 400 mosaics installed on subway platforms in the five boroughs of New York City? Fifteen years ago, when Cathleen was commissioned to create her own version of a Coney Island subway mosaic in a Manhattan family’s bathroom, she began her discovery of this immense underground museum with the largest collection of mosaics in North America. Cathleen has taken thousands of photographs of these amazing works and lead many artists, students and enthusiasts through the vast NYC transportation network to view these under-appreciated works of art. As a professional mosaic artist she will be explaining the process of how the mosaics were designed, fabricated and installed, giving insight into the complex process of creating a smalti mosaic mural.

Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
We recommend you use the restrooms in Grand Central Terminal prior to the tour. We will be taking bathroom breaks during the tour, but bathrooms are not available at every subway stop.
We recommend that you wear flat comfortable shoes and lightweight layers of clothing.
Please do not bring shopping bags, heavy or bulky items along on the tour.
Not recommended for people unable to climb stairs

Cathleen Newsham knows a lot about mosaics and that knowledge shows up in her tour of the NYC subway system. In addition to showing us old and new mosaic features in the subway, she offered interesting facts about what we were looking at and historical information as well. She prepared the group prior to meeting us in Grand Central Station about water, restrooms, snacks and overall agenda. She had tips about getting around on the subway so that the tour kept moving even if certain lines weren't operational for some reason. We were able to hear the particulars of each stop as well as take a few minutes to examine the art up close and take photos. She provided as well general information about the process of displaying the art, information about the various artist, and her expertise allowed us to better understand and appreciate this medium. At the conclusion of the tour she sent everyone interested notes about what we'd seen and where in the system each was located. It is important to wear layers because the temperature in the subway fluctuates. Also wear comfortable shoes! There is a lot of walking too. Elevators are few and far between so one should easily be able to use the stairs in and out of the system.

It was amazing to be able to see the mosaics from a distance, and then with Cathleen's guidance and knowledgeable explanations, to go up close to the mosaics and see all the intricate detail and thousands of pieces that make up each mosaic. Cathleen was able to smoothly move us on and off the subway trains to get to see as much of the mosaic artwork as possible. Her explanation of the artists who designed the mosaics and the techniques used to create them was thorough, entertaining and educational. Cathleen used humor and her vast knowledge throughout the tour, and even introduced us to areas of NYC that we previously had not yet explored!

What a fabulous tour this was! Cathleen is incredibly knowledgeable about the mosaics as well as navigating through the subways! Had a great time, hope to do another tour as there are so many mosaics to see!
