New York City's Amazing Subway Mosaic Tour - Manhattan

Join award winning mosaic artist Cathleen Newsham for this fascinating tour of Manhattan's stunning subway mosaics.

Do you know there are over 400 mosaics installed on subway platforms in the five boroughs of New York City? Fifteen years ago, when Cathleen was commissioned to create her own version of a Coney Island subway mosaic in a Manhattan family’s bathroom, she began her discovery of this immense underground museum with the largest collection of mosaics in North America. Cathleen has taken thousands of photographs of these amazing works and lead many artists, students and enthusiasts through the vast NYC transportation network to view these under-appreciated works of art. As a professional mosaic artist she will be explaining the process of how the mosaics were designed, fabricated and installed, giving insight into the complex process of creating a smalti mosaic mural.

Not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health
Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
We recommend you use the restrooms in Grand Central Terminal prior to the tour. We will be taking bathroom breaks during the tour, but bathrooms are not available at every subway stop.
We recommend that you wear flat comfortable shoes and lightweight layers of clothing.
Please do not bring shopping bags, heavy or bulky items along on the tour.
Not recommended for people unable to climb stairs

If you are new to mosaic art, and if you know very little about the NYC Subway system, this tour could be a good introduction of some of the fabulous mosaic art to be seen "underground". The guide was a professional mosaic artist, and so had interesting insights into how some of the subway mosaics were created. Her choice of what to stations to visit emphasized the newest and most technically "perfect" pieces, and lacked historical perspective regarding the art of the MTA, or any discussion or viewing of of non-photo-realistic mosaics. Also, the guide seemed surprisingly unfamiliar with NYC and the names of various structures, and a bit unorganized. Overall, a pretty underwhelming experience.

Hi Nancy, I'm so sorry you didn't enjoy the tour! There are over 500 mosaics in the NYC subways, so getting the group to 8-10 locations that are all fairly close to each other so we don't spend too much time riding the train can be a challenge. If I had known you were interested in some of the older mosaics I would have tried to take you to some alternate subway stops, and answered any questions you had regarding them. And sorry I didn't know a particular structure or building - I'm a mosaic artists with knowledge about the subway mosaics, but by no means an expert on NYC's architecture! Cathleen

I highly recommend this tour. Cathleen brings her extensive knowledge of technique to show the evolution of mosaics in the subways. We saw a huge selection of stunningly beautiful work. Well worth the time and money. A must see for both tourists and long time New Yorkers such our group.
