I was originally scheduled for the Bronx food tour but had to change last minute due to a conflict. I appreciate how easily the company accommodated me, and I was eager to attend any food tour they could put me on. I went on the Brooklyn food tour with tour guide Josh, a group of eight counting Josh. On a warm August afternoon, we sampled our way around a small section of this borough. We started in Stinky Brooklyn, sampling two small pieces of cheese; we also got a discount in this shop for purchases, and they offer some very interesting local delicacies! Then we went to Bien Cuit bread where we had a small bite of a baguette and a small bite of a ginger cookie. I would have liked larger portions, but I guess this is what the shop decides. At any rate, this bread was incredible!!! If I lived closer, I would be getting this bread regularly, and I learned that they ship, which is so nice. Our next stop was One Girl Cookies where we had three bite-sized cookies, all delicious. Next was 61 Local where we had a choice of drink (two beers, homemade lemonade, and homemade ginger ale in a very small cup) along with a sampling of their smoked almonds and their spicy peanuts. At Shelsky’s we shared an everything bagel with nova and scallion cream cheese, each of us getting a quarter of a bagel. Yes, the portions are very small on this tour but are delicious. The bagel and nova were so fresh! Next at Damascus we were due to have a small bite of homemade halvah, but Josh added a spinach pie for each of us. This was the most generous serving of the tour, and it was fabulous – fresh out of the oven! I would have enjoyed trying the falafel here, and one of the guests purchased one, saying that it was great. I bought a tray of baklava, which made it back home after clearance through security at JFK! At Brooklyn Farmacy (yes, I spelled that correctly), we sat in the back of a charming store that used to be a pharmacy! We had a choice of chocolate or vanilla egg cream, something that I have never had before. Based on what was left on the table when we departed, this was the least favorite of our stops. Perhaps the Farmacy could serve these in a smaller glass and/or serve something else to sample. Their menu of treats looked delicious! We ended at Court Pastry Shop where we had a choice of flavors of Italian ice, and we all enjoyed different flavors: pineapple, lemon, mango. It was a great ending to a hot day. I do believe the tour is very very carb heavy and offers very small portions, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. Josh made the day a success, and he offered most of us recommendations for restaurants to try both around Brooklyn and in the city.
