Last year, I booked a trip with Justin Ravenel because I wanted my seven-year-old grandson Julius and his mom to catch fish. Justin delivered in spades. He had both of them on big reds in 10 minutes and even had Julius driving the boat.
Last week, I booked a personal trip (just me) with Justin because I wanted to learn to catch reds in the small creeks around Edisto using artificials. Again, the trip was a great success. Justin poled me around the flats and I sight-fished from his “micro skiff.” In addition to the reds, I caught a really big flounder. But most importantly, the session made me a better saltwater fisherman. Based on Justin’s tips, I was soon casting 30% farther. And I learned when to fish (tide-wise) and the types of places where the reds hang out.
As I hoped, I was able to apply this knowledge when fishing from my kayak. Over the next four days, I was regularly onto reds in Scott Creek. Thanks, Captain Justin!
