The sunset trip was just terrific--a good mix of daylight, dusk, and full-on dark to sample different faces of the desert. Red Jeep Tours is a good-sized operation, with probably a dozen jeeps and many more guides. We really liked our guide, Mike--maybe a notch quieter and more of a science and nature geek than some of the others, but based on the reviews here the guides are all great in different ways. One suggestion is to take seriously the guidelines on closed-toes shoes. For most of the trip sandals would be just fine, but not for the poking around in notch canyons that was perhaps our favorite part.

We left promptly at 1:00 as scheduled and our guide, Cal, was personable and called us all by name right away. We drove a few miles toward the area and he began pointing out interesting features of the mountain range and vegetation. He had some aerial pictures of the fault line and a couple of native reptiles. I would have like to see more of these since we didn't see any in real time. I also would have liked to stop and climb up to the shale, but he had samples and I guess he can't stop and look closely at everything. I loved climbing up into a very narrow canyon, right on the fault. It gave me the feeling of being in this famous "crack in the earth" even though it's more complex than that--but it was fun, anyway. Thanks, Cal.

This was a very enjoyable and informative tour. Bonnie was an awesome guide. Learned a lot about the native people that lived here long ago as well as about the geology of the San Andreas fault. Definitely worth the money!
