Our trips depart from Mission Bay, which requires only a short 10 minute journey access to the open ocean where whales and dolphins can be seen! The search for whales and other animals begins as soon as you depart the dock and our marine biologists are on the microphone explaining exactly what to expect and what you are seeing from the get go!
Typically our trips are 2.5-3 hours in length, but time can vary based on seasons and locations of sightings.

This was my favorite experience while in San Diego for 5 days in early March. I was on the Saturday morning cruise. The captain knew exactly where to pilot the boat to see the whales. We saw a number of grey whales and one frisky humpback that seemed to want to show off. We also encountered dolphins, which was fun because they are playful and aren't shy to come close. There were also sea lions at the dock area. Our guide who narrated the cruise was friendly and enthusiastic and seemed very knowledgeable about whales and sea birds. The weather was perfect, which made for an entirely perfect outing. The boat was clean and comfortable. Not too crowded on the whole, but of course, everyone shifted to the particular area where one could best see a sighted whale. Although the swells were a bit more than I anticipated, it heightened the excitement and I still felt safe. It was nice to get a little wet in the sunshine! The cost was very reasonable - less than my roundtrip cab fare from downtown San Diego.

The smelly (gasoline) overcrowded boat was a miserable hours' long tour sighting few dolphins or whales of any species. You couldn't ascertain what you sighted, most were blips on the surface of the water. Would not recommended for anyone, much less for anxious children. We will not repeat.

I am sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your whale watching experience. I am not sure which trip you were on to know the sightings of that particular trip, but it is very rare for us that we do not have good sightings of whales and dolphins. They are wild animals however and we do not have any control over their behavior. For the few trips that we see shy whales, we also have spectacular trips where we see humpbacks jumping out of the water and huge pods of dolphins riding along with the boat. For every passenger that does not enjoy their experience, we also have people crying after seeing their first whale or dolphin in their natural environment. We never know what we will see, since we are in their world. We are sad to hear that you were not satisfied with your trip. Been whale watching elsewhere, never saw any whales! Can't say that now, from the seals basking in the harbour, you see plenty of nature and most importantly whales! Two pods of dolphins, two grey whale sightings and an ocean sunfish (never heard of them, can't say that now!) in a three hour adventure, well worth it and they give you a (no expiry date!) 50% voucher for a future tour! Knowledgeable, humourous guide, other staff friendly and helpful. We will do this again next time we are in SD!
