Our trips depart from Mission Bay, which requires only a short 10 minute journey access to the open ocean where whales and dolphins can be seen! The search for whales and other animals begins as soon as you depart the dock and our marine biologists are on the microphone explaining exactly what to expect and what you are seeing from the get go!
Typically our trips are 2.5-3 hours in length, but time can vary based on seasons and locations of sightings.

Details of the trip follow but I have to highlight the personal service we received when we had to change our reservation twice. We were coming from out of state and were not really keeping up on any water advisories. Whale Watch called me personally to tell me they would have to reschedule our original date due to a small water craft advisory. They even sent an email. We rescheduled by phone. Then we had a last minute change in plans. No problem, we called (the day we were supposed to sail) and they allowed us to reschedule for the next day. They did not have to do this, this was our change. And even with the advisory, they could have just sent an email and hoped we got the message. There are a number of whale watching tours. They pretty much have access to the same waters. But with all things being equal, Whale Watch’s service and staff wins out. Check in was a breeze. Before we sailed, they made sure we knew the temperature would be colder on the water and gave anyone who needed it, time to run back to our cars for a coat or blanket. The entire staff is very customer oriented. As for the tour… This was one of the best tours I have been on. We saw no less than 6 grey whales. There were several white sided dolphins that followed us. dolphin and sea lions as well. Various birds were also pointed out. I did not know what to expect. I guess I thought we would just ride around until we saw some whales! But once you go out with Whale Watch, you realize that there expertise and keen eyes avoids you riding around for hours hoping to just luck upon some whales. Our guide was very informative without monopolizing the trip. He prepared us for when to expect the whales to show their flukes so you could be ready with your camera. And if you missed the picture, don’t worry they take pictures of each trip and post them on Facebook. The boat was well set up. I did not expect there to be chairs for everyone. Our tour was about 30 people. We sat up top and I think this is one of the better spots since you could not have more than 8 people up there. But there really were no bad seats. Prepare… Dress in layers, motion sickness pills, expect a little moisture on the boat, I had my camera and items I a waterproof bag

I had a great trip with San Diego Whale Watch in late February 2016. We saw a bunch of whales, and I think a large part of that is due to Captain Kristin. She seemed to have a sense for where the whales would be. We left behind a juvenile Gray Whale, then found a group of four frolicking Grays. Then found some more, then some more! Eventually, we idled near a mother breastfeeding her calf. It was AMAZING. Thanks to the whole crew for making this happen, even if the naturalist--although good, didn't share as much interesting knowledge as I wished he would have.

My girlfriend and I went on a morning Whale Watching excursion leaving at 10:00am on Feb. 24th 2016 and had an amazing adventure. The conditions were wonderful and after going out we cruised around for a bit before spotting the first pair of Grey Whales, a mother and her calf. The Captain was very respectful of the creatures keeping a comfortable distance from their travels, but close enough for us to all see them. As we watched I spotted yet another just past them heading North. We saw another one, and again we kept our distance so as not to disturb it, but were close enough to see it. Then the most outstanding thing happened when another whale appeared and came very close to where our ship had stopped as it traveled past us and put on a show for us, jumping out of the water several times and swimming on staying close to the surface giving us lots of sightings and then a beautiful final fluke showing. Spectacular. Then we spotted a very large pod of Pacific White Sided Dolphin swimming by us and also putting on a show for us leaping out of the water and frolicking around us. Several of them then bow surfed off the front of our ship for a bit. The crew was fantastic and refreshingly very respectful of these magnificent creatures. All in all a far more enjoyable time than going to Sea World. This was the real thing and just a terrific time. Well worth it.
