We took Shannon Scott's after hours cemetery tour and learned all about some of the famous and not so famous people who are buried at Bonaventure. He is a grand storyteller and clearly cares very deeply about the cemetery and the people whose stories he relates. One word of forewarning: You will do a lot of standing and listening. Bring a little stool or whatever if this is going to be hard for you. Some of the stories will interest you more than others. However, just being in the cemetery after hours was an experience worth having, so if you find your mind wandering, that's fine. Just be there and when you drift back into the story, you'll enjoy what you hear.

On my recent trip to Savannah, and on the recommendation of a local resident, my friend and I decided to go on Shannon Scott's Ghost Tour. It was obvious from the very beginning that he loves his city and has dedicated his time to studying its past-- the mundane and the paranormal. He was very down to earth and had a way of engaging us, his audience, so that we felt as if we were truly participating in an experience and not just being ushered around and entertained like children with basic tourist drivel. In fact, we enjoyed the Ghost Tour so much that the next day we went on the Bonaventure Cemetery Tour as well. I wondered if it was possible for him to meet or exceed my high standards a second time, but against all odds, Shannon's Bonaventure Tour was, in my opinion, even more impressive than the first. His amazing storytelling ability combined with his background in art, created an experience that brought to life the lives of the people that are the real subject of the Cemetery. He spoke about the headstones and statues with the excitement of a true artist and made a place that is characteristically morbid into a living thing of true beauty. In a two hour period, I learned the (often unspoken) history of this Southern city while simultaneously celebrating life and death through the stories of its residents. His respect for the land and its residents was warm and welcoming and, in my opinion, is truly appreciated by both the living and the dead.
