On April 9, 1846, Hawthorne was sworn in as surveyor of Salem at a salary of $1,200 per year, a decent salary at the time. The position was so prestigious that his appointment was noted in the New York Tribune saying “the popular writer” has been named surveyor. But thing did not end well. We enjoyed hearing the history and ghost tales to go along with the sights we saw. We sidetracked to go through the Salem Witch Museum before picking up again.

Steven was an excellent guide. Not just stories and lore, but theatrical too. We even caught some paranormal events on film.
