Learn to surf on this 2-hour group lesson on Oahu. Join a group of students and discover how to ride the waves like some of the Island's most famous celebrities with the help of a certified, professional instructor. We have small student to instructor ratio of 1 instructor for every 3-4 students. Waikiki Surf Lesson starts a 10 minute safety slide show inside our surf shop, followed by heading to the beach and practicing on the sand for another 10 minutes. In our 20 year experience, we know that surfing is muscle memory, so when first timers master their surf stance then they tend to get up on their very first wave.

“It’s all good news” Thanks to Ron for the quote. If you want to have fun and surf. Go with Hans Hedemann. You get much more than you pay for with Hans and his crew. It’s the value of having the best instructors in the best place and having the best time of your life. I can’t put in to words how good our time with HHsurf has been. look up their website at www.hhurf.com and look at some of the named instructors. Hans, Ron, John, Serg, Seth, Sean, James, Chance, the list goes on. You will see these are top flight pro surfers. They are the best. You have the chance to learn from instructors that have beaten Kelly Slater or paved the way for pros like him. They are genuine people that care about making your surfing experience as much fun as it can be for you. After your lesson head upstairs to Lulu’s surf club grab some food and drink, check out the posters. You’ve just surfed with these guys. This experience is world class.

I have just spent one week in Oahu where I have taken 7 private surf lessons at Hans Hedemann Surf School in Waikiki. The school is located near the perfect beach, where Waikiki’s skyscrapers end to leave space to a beautiful tropical garden. A series of underwater reefs create an ideal zone for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers. Upon my arrival the managers and secretaries were extremely kind and after the bureaucratic formalities I was assigned (according to my request) a surf instructor named Seth Elmer. I must say that all the instructors of the school are friendly and professional at the same time. I have seen them working with groups and individuals and their kind attitude, attention to safety, professional experience and enthusiasm were truly amazing. All the students (young and old) sooner or later stood up on the board and got addicted to this sport while James, RP or Ron (just to mention some of the teachers) instilled stamina and joy with the friendly Aloha spirit. Of course I can speak more in details about Seth Elmer. He is an extraordinary instructor and an exceptional person. During his free time he works for his non-profit organization in which he helps troubled children to acquire confidence and self-esteem through surfing. He started his lesson on the ground with the mechanics of the sport: paddling, turning, facing the waves and the more difficult standing up action. Then, just before entering the water he spiritually prepares the student to an exhilarating experience by explaining the history of surfing or Leonardo’s theories about water energy or vividly describing the early kings of Hawaii surfing in Waikiki’s sacred waters. Once in the ocean everything gets more difficult especially for a urban person like me and the fatigue of paddling is almost extenuating, yet Seth was always there helping me paddling, turning and pushing the board in the right direction. My paddling was not good at all, but I slowly improved through exercise. It probably took me more than the usual person to win over my fears and weaknesses, but after a few lessons I was able to ride a relatively long wave. Thus, the instructor step by step led me into a further level. It was the most incredible experience! Beyond the beginners’ zone there is a second reef where the ocean gets dramatic and the more advanced surfers wait for the next wave in a quasi religious silence. Seth waited for the ideal moment: suddenly I found myself on a huge wave and I was able to ride it at a certain speed (at least for my standard) all the way to the beach. When I turned back the ocean was not the same, I had added a new dimension to my life and, needless to say it, surfing had become an addiction. I strongly recommend to all the visitors of Waikiki to not stop after the first lesson, but actually book at least 5 private lessons with Seth Elmer or any of the instructors of Hans Hedemann school. Only in this way they can begin to understand a fraction of what kind of emotions this sport can actually reveal. I think taking surf lessons should be the very aim of a vacation in Hawaii and Hans Hedemann is the perfect place to do so. I will certainly travel 20 hours from Rome to go back as soon as possible in order to take further lessons with Seth Elmer. Thank you Seth you are a great teacher and a great man!!! Looking back at my vacation you and the ocean deserve the same kind of applause!!!
