We did the Mt. St. Helens tour -- what a fantastic tour! It's a full day with many beautiful stops. Our guide, Marcus, was extremely entertaining. He knew about everything -- from the trees to the topography and it was all fascinating. It's amazing how much you see in one day: you start at the mountain itself (hike up the hill for a great vantage point), and proceed from there to the lava tubes, ape caves and a very cool old growth cedar forest. There are easy to moderate hikes at each stop. Be prepared with good walking shoes and an extra layer for the caves, and a hat in case it rains.

The St. Helen's adventure tour was awesome. We left Portland at 8 AM and drove in a very comfortable Mercades van. It took approximately two hours to get to the the Johnson Ridge Observatory. We had time to hike around a bit and view the film describing the volcanic eruption. Marcus then took us to Ape Caves and Lava Canyon which was another couple hours away. We hiked into the caves and saw a beautiful waterfall at Lava Canyon. Our last stop was Cedarwood Flats which was a short hike in an old growth forest. Some trees were 600 years old! Marcus was our tour guide and is very knowledgable about local flora and fauna. It is a long day, but well worth a once in a lifetime trip. Lunch is provided.
