My husband and I have been to a lot of WWII-related museums and locations from the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor to the Arnhem War Museum (Operation Market Garden) in Holland and many points in between. Throw in Anne Frank’s House, the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. and a few more, and you might understand why I didn’t really think we needed to go to this museum. I was wrong. This is one of the most thorough, educational and enjoyable museums I’ve been to. Well curated, this takes you through the war from beginning to end, and helps you piece everything together you have seen and heard before. There are many short films along the way where you will want to sit and watch and learn. You end in the Boeing pavilion and you will absolutely want to go up to the 4th floor catwalk to see the planes from above. A FEW NOTES: We got lost, which is easy to do because the map/guide doesn’t really lay out a “start here-> then go here” path. You begin in the Louisiana Pavilion. We skipped the train car photo booth because the line was long and we got there after noon. But we did go up to the top floor observation deck and checked out the art exhibit as well. We then went into #2 Solomon Victory area which is a couple floors of exhibits that take you through the war in chronological order. (There are elevators but you need to look for them.) When we went into #3 Campaign of Courage, you get a marvelous and more in depth look at the European Campaign on one floor and the Pacific Campaign on the other. So it repeats some of what you saw in the last part of the museum, but it is immersive and really well told with many short videos and interactive pieces along the way. It was almost 5pm when we exited #3 and almost skipped the Boeing exhibit (#5) but were encouraged to check it out and I’m glad we did. We needed more time than we had to see this entire museum, and we did not watch the extra Tom Hanks movie, which we would never have had enough time to see. This is easily an all day visit if you want it to be, but we got a lot out of it in four hours as well. TL;DR Don’t miss this museum, no matter how much time you have to visit.
