Like other reviewers, we considered three different canopy tours in Monteverde: Sky Trek, Selvatura, and The Original Canopy Tour. We decided on The Original Canopy Tour for a couple of reasons: we preferred walking and hiking instead of taking a tram; we were curious about climbing inside the strangler fig; we preferred the close-to-town location; and we thought the price was reasonable. Our guides were kind, encouraging, and helpful. One of the guides was the only female guide we had on any of our tours in Costa Rica, who, btw, was the best!!! : ) One of the guides took our camera and filmed as he rode one of the ziplines - thank you! - it has been fun to share that video with friends. The tour started with a Tarzan swing. It felt scary just for the moment before launching, but then it was just exhilarating and not scary at all. Then we did the ziplines. We have done zipline tours two other times (not in Costa Rica), and I think the Original Canopy Tour lines seemed much longer and the scenery more beautiful than the others we have done. It was just perfect. A great, great time. It was perfect for our kids (pre-teens), too. They had at least as much fun as anyone else!! I loved when we got to climb up inside the big old strangler fig to get to one of the platforms. if you think you will like that, you probably will! It was one of my (many) favorite parts of the tour. We enjoyed this activity so, so much! It was awesome! Wish we could give it more than five stars. I would 100% recommend taking a zipline tour while you are in Monteverde. It is hard to choose (if we had more time, I wish we could have gone to Sky Trek and Selvatura too!), but I can say for sure that The Original Canopy Tour is really fun and very special!!!

I spent quite a bit of time researching the 5 zipline companies in Monteverde. I chose Original Canopy based on the fact that the lines are located in old growth forest and that the guides didn't rush everyone through the zips. This indeed proved to be the case and as others have written, the guides will take movies or photos for you. They are also quickly catching up to other companies by adding more zip lines........ we went on 13.... and the tarzan swing, and a 1/2 mile long zip line which is in the final stages of completion. I saw some of the guides doing a test run and it looked awesome. One of the most unusual things was climbing inside a tree to get to one of the platforms. I doubt that other companies offer this. We also heard the quetzal calls while ziplining. Originally we thought the 5 year old would have to go tandem with the guides but he went alone on 10 of the 13 zips. He was ecstatic about that. I think if you're looking for a thrill than the superman zip might be the ticket but as a family we were more than happy with our day out with Original Canopy and the rides were fast enough to be fun for adults and the scenery incredible. Keep in mind that you hand brake with this co. but other companies brake for you. I prefer the former.

The Original Canopy Tour provides a great zip line tour that is nowhere near as crowded or rushed as Selvatura or Sky Trek. We only had five people in our group, with two guides who led us through the whole tour. The tour, the guides, and transportation from our hotel and back were all included the price of $45 per person. The tour is very safe. You are fitted with a helmet and a modern climbing harness at the beginning of the tour and you are double linked to all swings, zip lines and rappel ropes throughout the tour. The tour starts with a Tarzan swing on a double strand of heavy duty climbing rope. The swing is very thrilling. You just have to relax and have confidence you can't fall because the ropes are double connected to your harness. Next they take you on a short, very level zip line to get you introduced to the basics. After that the zip lines get longer and faster! At one point you climb up rope steps inside a giant hollow fig tree and then up a sturdy but swaying ladder high off the ground. As always, you can't fall because your climbing harness is connected to a safety rope, but the swaying ladder is quite an experience. After another one of the zip lines they lower you 60 feet or so to the forest floor on a rappel rope. You are firmly connected to the rope and they ask if you want to be lowered slowly, medium or fast - medium or fast are both very thrilling! A great service they provide is that one of the guides will offer to carry your camera and take photos and movie clips of your group throughout the tour. Our guide was a great photographer - we got excellent photos and a fantastic movie clip of one entire zip line run. We highly recommend The Original Canopy Tour!
