This tour turned out to be one of the highlights of our visit to Salem. We had been somewhat disappointed with our visit of the Salem Witch Museum. Strolling down Essex Street in the afternoon a nice witch (did not encounter any bad or mean ones while there) approached us and presented a brochure and invited us to attend The Salem Witch Walk Evening Tour. I was skeptical, but my wife and daughter wanted to try it. It turned out to be a very enjoyable, informative, fun and easy going event. It lasted about an hour and half. It started in the back yard of the establishment. A male witch (they prefer not to be called warlocks, it will be explained why in the tour), Tom, was our guide. He introduced himself, asked all in the tour our names and from where we were visiting. A preliminary introduction to witchcraft and its related subjects was given, a table with various artifacts of the witch trade were presented and purpose explained. A blessing ritual was performed and then we went on the tour. It was nicely paced, not rushed but not ridiculously slow either. Tom is very charismatic, funny, spoke clearly and loud enough for all to hear and understand him. He seemed very knowledgeable in all aspects of the witch trade and its history and also of all of Salem's history. One section of the tour was through the old original Salem Cemetery and he spent sometime explaining the significance of the symbols and writings of the headstones. Tom answered all questions posed directly and precisely and also gave his personal opinions with out malice, arrogance or evasion. We were allowed to take as many pictures as we wished and no restrictions of any kind were imposed. We did our tour in the height of summer so a bottle of water is recommend for comfort but a no time was it a necessity. Also comfortable footwear is preferred because there are periods of standing still while an explanation is made. However, we were allowed to lean on walls, sit on them or on the ground. It is a very good, casual tour. Recommend for both aficionados and skeptics alike. I am a skeptic - big time, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The straightforward sincerity, enthusiasm and friendliness of the tour guide was an absolute plus.
