We had heard about the Belle Meade plantation tour from friends of ours in Nashville who had done the wine pairing and the historic mansion tour, but I given our interest in the civil war and post-civil war era, we opted for this tour and were blown away with the knowledge of our tour guide, the quality of the tour and the information we learned. This tour has (shockingly) has only been available since this year, but it gives a nuanced, powerful narrative of the story of slavery at the plantation and the lives of the enslaved on it. We found aspects of the plantation itself troubling with regards to the way the markers phrased the "feats" of the confederacy, but this tour did a fantastic job of framing the "lost cause" ideology and showing how it impacts how the way in which the history of plantations, the civil war , and post-civil war TN is examined and shown to tourists.
Very powerful, would recommend.
