We did the South Side tour last year, with Marta & Dan, and this year decided the place to be was the East Side, largely Kapa'a, and it was led by Katherine. She did a fine job as leader, and the stops were all good ones for learning about the skilled food purveyors of Kauai. Judy at Haole Girl was the beginning location, and that worked out well -- if there's any downside to the tour (and that's a tiny one) it's a lot of standing in her shop; most other venues there was plenty of space and a chance to sit down while absorbing the Chefs' stories and approaches. The only other regret I'd have, and Katherine explained the whys and wherefores, was that we never made it to the "field" -- to where the food was actually produced. The explanation she gave was that the State food administration folks aren't enamored of having people in the field, eating on site -- they'd rather have the "consumption" going on in inspected restaurants or businesses where there was accountability. I understand, but it would have been great to see where some of the food comes from, at the producer side. I might add, the traffic would be a whole lot less congested & awful! Just a condition of growing and ambitious Kauai, I guess. But whether eating tritip at Paniolo Santa Maria Tritip, or trying the poke at Pono Market, burger and sushi at Kenji Burger or ending up with the exquisite offerings at Oasis by the Beach, it was all fun. Thank you kindly for the fine afternoon!
