Tucked between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, and accessible only by boat, Daufuskie Island is a real gem. This 4.5 hour Daufuskie Island trip provides a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of Lowcountry history on the undeveloped side of the island. Learn the rich history of the Native Americans, European settlers, the cotton trade, and the Gullah culture. We encourage you to wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring water, snacks, and sunscreen.

Daufuskie Island

It begins with a boat ride from Shelter Cove Marina to the back side of Daufuskie Island. The ride is an important part of the tour! Along the way we will stop for dolphins and other wildlife, plus view and discuss the sites on Daufuskie and the neighboring islands that are best seen from the water. Once on Daufuskie, you'll get on golf carts and take a tour of the historic, undeveloped side of the island. We stop at all of the significant historic sites and artisan shops of Daufuskie.

This was the ideal historical tour of Daufuskie Island! I loved the Flat Bottom Ride over including lots of dolphin sightings. There were so many dolphins I lost count! Captain Doreen was the perfect guide and had a wealth of knowledge about the island, Pat Conroy, and the Gullah people. The golf carts seated 8 passengers including the captain so if you are touring with a group, keep that in mind! The tour included several stops across the island including a visit to the historical school house. As an educator, it was my favorite stop. The visit also include a local artisan's shop. The local art was incredible. Each piece was unique and I wish I could have bought more of it! The weather was warm but the tour provided cold water while on board the boat. I truly appreciated Captain D's compassionate and empathetic sharing of the Gullah history. Those with back challenges may want to sit in the rear of the boat as the front can be a little bouncy. Our trip was relatively smooth but I can see where that may be a challenge. If you have the chance to visit Daufuskie while visiting HHI, this tour is a must do!

Our guide was wonderful! She was very knowledgeable and encouraged us to ask questions. I believe she emphasized our areas of interest. Our expectations were exceeded. We left differently than we arrived.

Today my wife and I had the opportunity to join Doreen Kuenzler for a tour of Daufuskie Island. She was an amazing guide teaching us the history of the island, educating us about native birds and other local species and connecting us with several locals on the island. Her knowledge of the area was second to none! In addition to being our guide, she was our boat captain taking us past numerous pods of dolphins, sharing personal stories of the area and taking the time to answer every question we had! We highly recommend this tour and highly recommend Doreen Kuenzler!
