I booked the Makena Turtle Town Kayak and Snorkeling tour for four remotely from California. I received a confirmation email promptly, giving all the necessary details. The night before our tour, we received a phone call. Due to the high winds, we were unable to launch out of Makena, but were re-directed to Maui Ocean Sports in Lahaina at a later time, which worked out well. Our guide, Garrett, or Bob as we affectionately refer to him, was very knowledgeable, a great teacher (we all had kayak paddling experience, but were a little worried about getting back up into the kayak after snorkeling). He put our minds to rest, giving excellent instruction that worked. We learned a lot of information about the coastline, all the Hawaiian islands, and what we might see while snorkeling. We were very lucky to see a pod of spinner dolphins. Although we didn't see much while actually snorkeling, the time out on the water and the chance spotting of the dolphins made it all worthwhile. Garrett provided snacks and water on the trip. Use lots of sunscreen (especially on the tops of your feet) and drink more water than you think you can hold. I got dehydrated, which made the trip back to shore a little icky. All in all it was a great experience, and the folks at Maui Ocean Sports were all very helpful. Thanks, Garrett! We had a great time!

We did the Lahaina Paddle with Garrett. He was an awesome guide, and our experience could not have been better. Despite some larger waves, he navigated us safely through the channel and was a super instructor, teacher about both kayaking and the Hawaiian islands and very entertaining too. I would highly recommend this experience! We even saw sea turtles swimming by us and some shark fins from afar, and could see through the beautiful blue waters of Lahaina.

We booked the Lahaina Paddle for 11 am. Don't know if there was a mix up with the guide or with other bookings, but the guide said hey we are going to snorkel too. We did very little kayaking or paddling which is why we booked the trip. We paddled out in the rough surf and the guide said jump in and snorkel. There were a few turtles in the area, but it was very difficult to see them because of the next to zero visibility and difficult to swim around because of the rough water. This made it pretty much pointless unless you wanted to kill yourself struggling against the waves to catch an obscure glimpse of a turtle. We paid 120 for a Kayak trip and we spent most of the time swimming in the ocean. Don't know if this is the norm or just our experience on this trip. On the bright side it was a beautiful day in Maui.
