(Note: we would give this 4.5 stars if this was an option.)
My wife and I did the South Kona Snorkel Expedition, which is three sites covered over roughly five hours. Our guides, Kevin and Kaitlyn, were great - informative, attentive when it came to guests’ safety, and friendly - and they went out of their way to create a positive experience. The zodiac raft was comfortable, and everyone on-board seemed to enjoy the ride.
We appreciated stopping to see some caves and lava tubes. Like others, we would have liked more time and effort to spot dolphins or whales, especially given the price paid.
The snorkeling was fine. The spots were nice and had a decent variety of fish. We were astonished with the amount of coral bleaching and decay, though, which isn’t SQ’s fault. We had visited Big Island in 2006, so we remembered the reefs, such as Kealakekua Bay, being brighter and full of life, including turtles and clown fish. Neither were to be found at KB this time.
I did spot a black-tipped reef shark, and we saw a turtle at the second site, and those were the highlights.
A very good trip, nonetheless, and we enjoyed ourselves.

Aloha! Thank you for choosing Sea Quest Hawaii's South Kona Expedition Snorkel Tour. We are glad to hear that you and your wife had a great time on the South Kona Snorkel Expedition, and we truly appreciate your recognition of Kevin and Kaitlyn’s efforts. It’s fantastic to know that you felt safe and well taken care of during the trip.
We completely understand your desire for more opportunities to see dolphins or whales and appreciate the feedback. We do our best to get to view dolphins and whales during our boat ride to and from the different snorkel sites, but we do appreciate the desire to spend more time with them. As for the snorkeling, it truly breaks our hearts seeing the coral bleaching and protecting our land and our reefs is such an important priority for us. We’re very glad you were able to spot a reef shark and a turtle! Spotting a reef shark is such an exciting moment while snorkeling!
Thank you again for joining us, and we hope to welcome you back for another adventure in the future! Mahalo nui loa!
